On Wednesday 17th June, 2026, Kenya will host the global observance of 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐃𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐃𝐚𝐲 in partnership with United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification under the theme “𝙍𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙚𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙨: 𝙍𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙜𝙣𝙞𝙯𝙚. 𝙍𝙚𝙨𝙥𝙚𝙘𝙩. 𝙍𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙚," at Vipingo Central Primary School in Kilifi County. The day is the United Nations’ global moment to raise awareness of land degradation and drought and to mobilize action to protect and restore healthy land. Kenya will be the first in nearly a decade that the African continent hosts the global observance. The global event will spotlight the vital role of rangelands in strengthening climate resilience, enhancing food and water security, conserving biodiversity, and sustaining the cultural heritage and livelihoods of pastoralist and Indigenous communities worldwide. Rangelands cover more than half of the world’s land surface yet remain among the most undervalued ecosystems. They face increasing pressures from climate change, land degradation and competing land uses.
