At İGA Istanbul Airport, one of Europe’s busiest aviation hubs, the Karsan Autonomous e-ATAK, automated by ADASTEC, successfully completed an operational demonstration in live apron traffic in collaboration with Turkish Airlines, İGA Istanbul Airport, and Karsan Automotive. Designed around Turkish Airlines apron workflows, the demonstration simulated crew transportation, shift mobility, and apron-area logistics across an overall 11-kilometer route. One of the First Automated Public Transportation Applications in Ski Tourism! Karsan Autonomous e-ATAK automated by ADASTEC completed passenger operations in Sälen, Sweden, introducing automated public transport to ski resort environments and winter tourism. Connecting ski centers and accommodation areas along a 4.8 km route, the system operated in mixed traffic and shared spaces, interacting continuously with pedestrians and skiers under winter conditions. The World’s First Driverless Bus Operations Have Begun After many years of continuous operations in Stavanger, another milestone has been achieved. Karsan Autonomous e-ATAK automated by ADASTEC’s SAE Level-4 automated driving software, flowride.ai, has now received approval to operate without a safety driver. In Stavanger, where several firsts in automated public transport have been realized, including Europe’s first automated bus operations, deployment on open public roads, carrying ticketed passengers and tunnel handling another milestone has been achieved, marking the beginning of driverless operations. The vehicle is now starting to carry passengers without a safety driver on a BRT line. Operating on a 10 km dedicated route between the hospital and the university, it will transport passengers autonomously in designated sections, five days a week between 06:00–13:00. The milestone was marked through a dedicated ceremony and a live driverless showcase. Operating in the final stage of development similar to Line 906 in Burgdorf, the Karsan Autonomous e-ATAK covers a 6 km route with 11 stops, navigating traffic lights, roundabouts, crosswalks, and complex urban scenarios, all at a steady speed of 40 km/h in mixed traffic, operated by ÜSTRA. The route will be extended in two stages. The first stage will begin in mid-September for public use with the connection between Burgdorf railway station and the Schwarzer-Herzog roundabout. There is an alternate reality where Cray took their vector supercomputers, ditched FP64 calculations, and went with one FP32 pipe and a BF16 tensor core pipe. The same instruction set, memory architecture, and vector registers would have made a sweet deep learning machine, in many ways nicer than SIMT CUDA programming on GPUs. A Y-MP class machine like that could have delivered the AlexNet and DQN moments two decades earlier. Even doing everything in FP64 with no architectural changes, a Cray-1 would have been the best machine in the world for neural networks. If @geoffreyhinton had access to one for early research, the case could have been made for the architectural modifications to 10x the performance.
