URI’s Graduate School of Oceanography is one of the world’s premier academic institutions of oceanography and ocean exploration. An anchor of the blue economy.
It's summer and STEEP trainees are out in the field!!
Kelsey Staniec (pictured) and Jarod Snook, members of the Lohmann Lab at @URIGSO, spent the day in Grills Preserve, Rhode Island. Field work entailed collecting environmental samples to assess #PFAS contamination in the area.
And we are off on leg 1 of the VAMPIRE - BATS cruise in Bermuda w the team from @BIOSstation, @URIGSO, and @SoMAS Despite its name, the VAMPIRE instrument works both day and night.
Join us for URI Day of Giving and you can be the driving force in supporting the URI community. 💙🐏
Any contribution to the new Research Impact Fund helps grad students and faculty continue their research even in the case of external funding cuts.

‼️🚧 Last fall, federal & state leaders joined @universityofri for a beam signing ceremony to celebrate progress on Bay Campus renewal.
This week, the beam & its messages were installed on the Ocean Robotics Laboratory building, marking another milestone in construction!
Unusual black smokers at deepest known active hydrothermal vents (Beebe/Piccard, ~5km depth on Mid Cayman Rise) spew extremely Cu-rich fluid. We visited in person on 1st DSV Alvin expedition after major deep diving upgrade. More pics in new article (see below). #Geology#Science
Recently upgraded Alvin can now dive to 6500m. Read our new article about its capabilities, latest #deepsea science discoveries, & new milestones on its science verification expedition 🌊🛠🧪.

It’s our favorite day of the year—Happy #CTDAppreciationDay! 🎉 CTDs are essential to marine research, providing invaluable data about water properties, ocean circulation, and so much more.
ALT 📸 This shot captures a nighttime deployment of a 12-plume CTD by MATE Intern Josie Adams aboard the #RVEndeavor during cruise EN719, led by chief scientist Chad Smith, last summer. Also featured is #URIGSO marine tech Bonny Clarke, who is crucial in supporting these science missions!
❄️ Snow on the bayou! Unusual weather made its way to Houma, Louisiana, where the RCRV Program team is hard at work constructing #RVNarragansettDawn. This rare snowstorm adds a unique touch to the sights around the shipyard. Stay safe & warm, everyone!

#RVEndeavor's December transit from Bermuda➡️ Rhode Island was the perfect opportunity to host a Marine Technician Information Technology-focused training cruise, #EN726!
Thanks to #URIGSO’s Melissa Gonsalves & Rachel Simon for leading this program & Nate Roberts for assisting!
8 marine techs from @LUMCONscience, @BIOSstation, @OSUCEOAS & #URIGSO participated in hands-on training (basic computer networking, firewall training, systems data backup, system virtualization) - essential skills as we prepare for the arrival of the new #NSFfunded RCRV fleet!
