Unlike Virginia, in Maryland it was Republicans who introduced grid utilization and Democrats agreed. New op-ed from @IanMagruder and Molly Knoll on the MD breakthrough this week: marylandreporter.com/2026/04…

U.S. Energy @SecretaryWright on grid utilization: "The states that have done the best on electricity prices, all of them have fast demand growth. The faster your demand growth is, the more you can push your electricity prices down. And another reason for this, it's just more efficient use of assets. Our electricity grid today, as we sit here, it only operates at about 50% capacity. So today, we've got hundreds of gigawatts of spare power right now."

Google is now the first cloud provider to integrate 1 GW of flexible demand into long-term utility contracts. Our ability to shift or reduce our energy demand when it’s needed can help utility companies balance supply/ demand and plan for future capacity needs. This is a big milestone for responsible data center growth and helps keep costs lower for local communities. blog.google/innovation-and-a…

New independent research from @BrattleGroup, out today: the U.S. grid runs at ~50% capacity. Rates are up 5.6%/year since 2020. A 10% increase in grid utilization could save American consumers $110–170B over the next decade. Read it: brattle.com/the-untapped-gri… #TheUntappedGrid #UtilizeCoalition

"This is one of the more interesting energy coalitions we’ve seen launch in a while, and the reason is simple: it aligns the economic interests of very different companies around a problem that’s genuinely fixable." electrek.co/2026/03/10/tesla…

Today, the Utilize Coalition officially launches. America's electric grid operates at just 53% of capacity on average. Nearly half of the generation, transmission, and distribution infrastructure Americans have already paid for sits idle for much of the year — while electricity bills keep rising and demand is about to surge like nothing the grid has seen in a generation. Soon-to-be-released independent research from @TheBrattleGroup, commissioned by Utilize and @GridLabEnergy, finds that improving grid utilization could save U.S. consumers more than $100 billion on electricity bills over the next decade. The opportunity is real. The technologies to capture it already exist. What's been missing is a coordinated effort to put grid utilization at the center of how we plan, invest, and build. That's what Utilize is here to do. We're proud to launch with seven founding members who are already putting this to work — @teslaenergy, @carrier, @Google, Renew Home, Sparkfund, SPAN, and Verrus — representing batteries, smart home systems, flexible data center load, intelligent HVAC, residential virtual power plants, and grid-interactive data centers. Different technologies. One shared principle: get more from what we've already built. Learn more and join us: utilizecoalition.org/
