UT health care professionals are committed to helping children thrive—in a clinic room or out on the field. As World Cup games kick off across Texas, @UTHealthHouston physicians encourage children to take inspiration from soccer stars and get in the game. They share how playing soccer supports physical and mental health while helping kids build confidence, teamwork, and long-lasting friendships. utphysicians.com/health-bene…

Dust often hinders solar panel performance, but a @UTEP study finds that solar panels in the Southwest require significantly less cleaning than those in other desert climates. From a “living laboratory” in the Chihuahuan Desert, UTEP researchers are helping position West Texas as a renewable energy powerhouse.
Jun 5
A new study by UTEP researchers found that solar panels in Alamogordo, New Mexico, lose only about 2-3% of their power output due to dust buildup — a fraction of the losses reported at similar desert sites in the Middle East, Iran and China. ⚡🔋 The findings reveal insight into the economics of solar energy development in parts of the Chihuahuan Desert. ☀️ Learn more: utepn.ws/3RKrTQl

At SFA, students and faculty are helping shape the future of forestry and agriculture through hands-on, grant-funded research. 🌲 Supported by a @USDA Conservation Innovation Grant, SFA researchers are using a mobile biochar production system to transform forestry residue into a valuable soil amendment that supports healthier soils and more sustainable forestry and agricultural practices. As the only forestry program in the @utsystem, SFA is proud to be one of just 53 projects selected nationwide for this USDA investment, providing Lumberjacks with unparalleled research opportunities while developing innovative solutions that benefit Texas forests, agriculture and rural communities. #AxeEm

New research from @UTSWMedCenter is helping to unlock the mechanics of Ovarian Cancer. Researchers found that cancer cells use stress hormone signaling to reshape their environment, drawing in immune-suppressing cells that shut down the immune system’s ability to attack the cancer. The finding opens up the prospect of more effective treatments through a combination of both chemotherapy and immunotherapy. UTSW has more: utsouthwestern.edu/newsroom/…

Do you have the guts to stay healthy? 💪 Researchers are increasingly turning their attention to the intestinal microbiome — and the vast community of bacteria living in the digestive tract — as a key indicator of long-term health.
Research led by Qingjie Li, PhD, is advancing understanding of how gut bacteria influence aging & disease. His findings suggest early-life microbes may help reduce age-related changes linked to gastrointestinal diseases, including liver cancer. Read more: utmb.us/fzo

New insights from @utmbhealth researchers show how SARS-CoV-2 causes infection and disease. The findings demonstrate that the virus relies on multiple, overlapping mechanisms to suppress immune activity and avoid detection. By identifying which of these mechanisms play especially vital roles, the findings help prioritize which should be targeted in the development of future antiviral therapies.
A UTMB research team led by Fuchun Zhou, PhD, and Alexander Bukreyev, PhD, identified two SARS-CoV-2 proteins that help COVID-19 suppress the body's early immune defenses. The findings could help guide future antiviral therapies & vaccine strategies. 🔗utmb.us/fzt
