Answering the latest Vitalik crypto x ai post because I felt frustrated about a few things I agree on the 4 places where it makes sense, namely: 1. AI participates in crypto. 2. AI as better crypto UX 3. AI in smart contracts 4. Using crypto to build AI Where it falls short though is the 4th point. It’s by far the less detailed and highly focused on cryptography-enabled features. He briefly mentions “using crypto incentives to incentivize making better AI" as @opentensor does and considers it “long-term but intriguing”. Let me tell you, it’s neither long-term nor intriguing. It’s already here and it’s mind blowing. Let me explain: 1. Crypto is about social coordination systems. Crypto is the future of finance? No, it’s the future of coordination, and finance is a coordination game. Don’t fade DAOs, DePIN, DeSci, or Network states, it's what crypto is about. 2. Building AI is about coordination. Today's best foundation models are built by big tech companies, namely OpenAI, Meta, Google, Amazon. They are the GPU-rich, they are the ones benefiting from economies of scale. But we’re getting better at mechanism design and coordinating ourselves on chain - first was miners coordination on bitcoin, followed by DeFi on ethereum that introduced more complexity, and now we've reached a point of no return… Wit @akashnet providing GPU access to everyone, @Filecoin and @Jackal_Protocol providing the storage, Bittensor providing incentives for open AI models, and @OKP4_Protocol building the orchestration layer for multi-party AI workflows, the decentralized AI horizon opens. 3. Coordination at scale will outpace economies of scale. Today, one hundred GPU-rich engineers in California have built the best models. Tomorrow, and I won’t be surprised to see it happen in less than 5 years, hundreds of thousands of data providers and engineers worldwide will contribute on the same projects. Private data will be accessed at scale through incentives while minimizing trust requirements. Engineers contributions will be coordinated on-chain with the help of AI. Vitalik posted this graph: But Crypto and AI don’t merely have synergies. Crypto is the foundation for AI to thrive. Crypto is the body; AI is the mind. The potential is so far-reaching that it will spark the biggest speculative mania humankind has ever seen. And yes, the 4th point is where value will aggregate the most, even in the short term, because “during a gold rush, sell shovels”.

A DAO could buy 23andMe and fully decentralize the data. - Nothing stored on central server - 100% on user hard drives - All stats calculated via secure multiparty computation or the like - Use zero knowledge to maximum extent Probably a group out there which can do this now.
within months you will be able to buy genomics data from 14 million americans for /- $200m? the inevitable fire sale of this mess to an overseas PE firm is going to be a national security matter on the scale of which we haven't seen in healthcare in years

On Libertarian Maximalism in the crypto space: Crypto's core feature is social coordination, not 'freedom'. Financial sovereignty(freedom) is a byproduct of this coordination, not the other way around. For this reason, parts of the Permissionless keynote by Vorhees felt misguided Crypto is a substrate for rapid iteration over coordination systems such as finance/economics, voting, resource allocation (eg taxes), conflict resolution... The sandbox that is crypto is enabling a renaissance of governance, allowing people to test new systems at scale, such as Harberger tax and quadratic voting, that have been otherwise confined to theory/academia for decades There's so much libertarian maximalism in this space, which is in opposition to the core property: social coordination. Libertarian maximalism equates to zero coordination/ chaos. Yes yes the opposite of libertarianism is tyranny and we don't want that either, but crypto is a substrate for accelerating our understanding of various coordination systems, not one single coordination system to adhere to I embrace and love many libertarian movements in the crypto space, but as with nearly all other things: maximalism bad. For more on social coordination, I encourage you to read Meditations on Moloch: slatestarcodex.com/2014/07/3…
With respect, I found @ErikVoorhees' keynote to be jejune, anti-democratic, and disingenuous. It may be effective as a rallying cry for libertarians, but as a strategic framework for the global adoption of crypto, it is so divorced from reality as to be worthy of ignoring. The speech's strongest points centered around the notion that "code is better than law." There is merit to the claim that transparent, mathematically-based rule-making can yield superior results to an opaque, politically-based process. I also agree with his characterization of the right to transact as fundamental to human existence. However, I disagree with the perspective that American democracy is so deserving of disdain as to be rejected. Voorhees' conflation of the "state" as a single entity ignores the variety of political systems across the world and their relative levels of freedom. Democracy is categorically better than totalitarianism, and to reduce both to the machinations of men with "dead eyes and weak hearts" is to deny millennia of political progress, as well as the suffering of those under more oppressive regimes than the one Voorhees himself is subject to. Voorhees' political framework reveals a level of hypocrisy and immediately crumbles when applied to the real world. Does he not comply with the subpoenas issued to him by the regulators he calls out in the audience? Does he not pay the income taxes that he castigates at the beginning of the speech? Would he have the creation of roads, bridges, and highways mediated through smart contracts today? There is a place for decentralized finance; there is also a place for the actions of a centralized state on behalf of its people, and to deny that is childish. Voorhees says: "The political class... that legion of bureaucrats suckling at the teat of plundered wealth, with all their ornaments of authority, with all their hubris masked as confidence, with the inauthenticity of their smiles matched only by the absurdity of their ideas, and I see no reason to submit to the permissions under which they seek to restrain me. To such people, we owe nothing." The reality is that Voorhees - and all of us - do submit to these permissions because we recognize the rule of law under a democratic system, arrived at through voting and lawmaking. The process is never perfect; it can even be corrupt; yet, we comply because we have faith that the inclusive political institutions that propelled America to become the financial hegemon will eventually recognize the importance and utility of crypto. It is reasonable and just to seek the consent – i.e., the permission – of the governed; that is democracy. I strongly question a strategy which alienates all those involved in government as weak-willed and immoral. What does painting with such a broad brush achieve beyond revealing your own biases? In government, like in crypto, there are good people and bad people. We should aim to excise the bad people and have the good people in both spheres work together towards an open, global financial system. I have much respect for Voorhees as an OG of crypto, and I understand that his perspective is a large part of how crypto came to be as big as it is today. But it is an untenable perspective weighed down by its idealism, dogmatism, and hyperbole and will slow down the adoption of crypto as we approach its next phase of global adoption. To wholly reject the democratic state is libertarian propaganda and is of no use for the growth of crypto as an open, global financial system. We should instead recognize the merits of democracy and use them to further expand the reach of crypto.
