Wishing Maysum Abdullah a speedy recovery! He is the heroic teacher who tackled the schoolgirl with a knife at the Co-op Academy in Higher Blackley, Manchester earlier this week. While protecting other students, the father of one sustained injuries to his neck and hand. His wife Samia posted, ‘My husband entered teaching to make a positive difference in young people’s lives and he is truly a hero for protecting and safeguarding those children.’

Tomorrow marks the 3rd anniversary of losing him. It’s unbearable and still so raw. This has been a massive shock to our whole family, and right now, our only priority is being at his bedside and helping him recover. We want to say a profound thank you to the local people who bravely stepped in during the attack. Your quick actions absolutely saved his life, and we will never forget what you did for him in that moment. We also want to thank the emergency services and the doctors and nurses looking after him. We are aware of the tensions and talk of protests following this incident. We want to make it absolutely clear that overnight unrest is not welcome, and peaceful protest is the only way forward. We have many migrants who make a deeply valuable contribution to our country, including in our healthcare system and hospitality sector and we depend on them to make our country work. I keep thinking about @MRMIKEYGRAHAM from Boyzone. When the documentary came out, I remember seeing the pain in his eyes. It was a look I recognised straight away. The kind of pain that doesn’t need words. For some reason, I felt compelled to reach out to him. He didn’t know me from Adam, yet he took the time to reply. That small act of kindness has always stayed with me. I’ve seen some of the photos and clips from the Boyzone shows this weekend, and it genuinely made me smile to see him getting his moment. His light. His stage. Maybe I’m wrong, but I still see that same pain in his eyes at times. Mikey has spoken openly about his mental health struggles, and I really hope these shows have brought him something positive. Some closure. Some peace. Maybe even the chance to finally move forward carrying a little less weight than before. The truth is, I’m not even a massive Boyzone fan. Yet I’ve always found myself rooting for him. What I do know is this. The comments about his appearance, his weight, or whether he “looked the part” completely miss the point. Getting on that stage at all took courage. Standing in front of thousands of people when you’ve openly battled your mental health is no small thing. It doesn’t matter whether it was three songs or thirty. Sometimes just showing up is the victory. That deserves respect, not criticism. I doubt he’ll ever see this, and he certainly doesn’t need me defending him. But people who carry their struggles publicly while still finding the strength to keep going deserve a bit more kindness from the rest of us. Well done, Mikey. I think a lot of people are quietly proud of you.

I have close friends who are Sikh. Their community has been a credit to the UK. They’re devastated by the heinous crime committed by Vikrum Digwa. They’re vocal in condemning the brutal and senseless murder of young Henry Nowak. I stand by Henry’s family and the Sikh community as hard right forces shamelessly exploit this tragedy.
