Breaking from the G7 in Evian 🇫🇷:
Britain sanctions 20 oil tankers, along with further shipping insurers and services as part of latest bid to “choke” Russia’s shadow fleet.
It makes the UK the first G7 country to sanction several Liquefied Natural Gas vessels recently acquired by Russia.
New effort also launched to stop Western goods ending up in the hands of Russia’s military.
(In the past, I’ve been told this involved innocuous items like washing machines being sold to a 3rd country, then stripped and parts sold on that could be used in combat.)
Three companies and 10 GRU officers suspected of acquiring such technology have been sanctioned, too, and will extend to third country suppliers in China, Thailand and Türkiye.
Keir Starmer says: “These sanctions target the vessels, the money and the actors propping up Russia’s war economy, and in turn, threatening European security.
"Working with our G7 allies, we will continue to increase the pressure in Putin and his circle of collaborators until Russia’s war machine is brought to a halt and peace returns to our continent.”
