Marching towards Belgrade, I sincerely hope the last one. In one week time they will all merge into one: students, farmers, citizens. It’s time for Vucic and his corrupt regime to crumble.

Students are marching towards the parliament building in Belgrade.
Studenti stižu ispred Skupštine, u samoj Skupštini haos: dimne bombe, petarde, ludilo - dakle dođite, danas ih karamo!

Western Europeans fail to understand the extent to which they were f*cked by the 2008 subprime crisis. It's actually quite extraordinary: if you take the example of France in 2008 we were almost on par with the US in GDP per capita, $45.5k vs $48.5k, a small 6% difference. Fast forward to 2023, 15 year later, and we still haven't recovered: we're at $44.4k GDP per capita, still lower than in 2008! Meanwhile the US is now at $81.6k or almost double what we are: from 6% difference to 100% difference in just 15 years...

In my experience the biggest reason for slow performance is allocating a lot of small objects. Allocation is expensive on modern computers (mutexes between 10-32 threads in consumer CPUs). And this practice scatters objects around in the memory, causing a lot of cache misses.

Dropout layers in a Transformer leak the phase bit (train/eval) - small example. So an LLM may be able to determine if it is being trained and if backward pass follows. Clear intuitively but good to see, and interesting to think through repercussions of colab.research.google.com/dr…

Remember as it was yesterday. We tried really hard. I was later followed by security police and almost ended up in the military jail. But ultimately we failed, as the leaders of the protest turned out to be assholes. I saw that in 97 and then left that place, and never regretted.
On this day, 22 years ago, on 9 March 1991, Serbian citizens came out to protest against Milošević’s nascent dictatorship The Yugoslav People’s Army pulled out tanks and crush the protests Had the demonstrators prevailed maybe we wouldn’t have Yugoslav wars of the 1990s/1
