Friday Public Transport Day isn't a claim that everything is working perfectly. It's an invitation to build something better together and to show that there is demand for better public transport in one of Mumbai's biggest business districts. Please join us @bkcmoves a collective of civil society organizations and individuals. Letโ€™s work together. Change won't happen overnight. But it has to start somewhere. One Friday at a time!

On World Environment Day 2026, with @BKCMoves we spent a few hours on the streets of BKC interacting with commuters, traffic police personnel, and other stakeholders, advocating for safer and more convenient walking conditions. Better walking infrastructure improves the daily experience of commuters, supports public transport use, reduces transport-related emissions, and contributes to India's energy security. The time for Walkable Cities is NOW! #WalkingProject #BKCMoves

Let's remember that one of the most powerful and simplest solutions to the energy crisis is walking. Cities that make walking safe, comfortable, and accessible reduce dependence on fossil fuels, strengthen energy security, and lower emissions. Every trip made on foot is a trip that requires no fuel, produces no emissions, and strengthens community resilience. Safe walking isn't just a mobility issue, it is an environmental and public health issue Support our work #WorldEnvironmentDay #SaferWalking #WalkingProject

Change begins when residents take ownership of their streets. Kevin Pinto, Convener of the Chakala Walkability Team, one of our locally led neighbourhood groups, has spent the past several weeks working to address pedestrian safety issues in Dr. Charat Singh Colony, Chakala. Although this narrow residential street is usually calm, off-peak hours often see speeding by two-wheelers and instant delivery riders. Combined with the street's winding geometry, numerous blind spots, and lack of dedicated pedestrian infrastructure, this creates significant risks for pedestrians. To better understand the problem, Kevin collaborated with Associate Prof. Sonia Saraf and her students from Sir J.J. College of Architecture, who conducted a detailed assessment of the 400-metre street and prepared a set of recommendations based on Indian Roads Congress (IRC) guidelines and best practices. Kevin and Sonia have been pursuing these recommendations with the BMC and Traffic Police. We hope to see these evidence-based improvements implemented soon. This is exactly what our Local Walkability Teams initiative is designed to achieve: enabling residents to identify local issues, build technical partnerships, and work with authorities to create safer, more walkable neighbourhoods. Want to anchor a team in your locality? Write to us at info@walkingproject.org. #LocalWalkabilityTeams

Some positive news from Bandra West following our recent post on the importance of scientific tree assessment. Mumbai has launched a pilot project in Pali Hill, Bandra West, using AI and LiDAR technology to digitally assess and monitor trees. The initiative will create detailed 3D geotagged tree inventories, track tree health, and support better urban conservation and management. We hope this marks the beginning of a broader shift towards evidence-based urban tree management across the country, with greater involvement of trained experts in the delicate practice of tree pruning and care. Scientific assessment can help move us away from haphazard hacking and excessive pruning practices that are harmful not only to trees but also to the people who depend on them for shade, cooling, biodiversity, and safety. Urban trees are critical infrastructure, and managing them scientifically is an investment in healthier, more resilient cities. #PruningProject

๐ŸŒณ With the monsoons approaching rapidly, tree trimming activity across Mumbai is in full swing. Every year, large-scale pruning is carried out to reduce the risk of trees and branches falling during heavy rains and winds. But tree management is far more complex than simply cutting branches. There is an entire field called Arboriculture โ€” the scientific management and care of trees in urban environments. Arborists study the structure, health, balance, and long-term growth of individual trees to ensure they remain safe, resilient, and healthy while continuing to provide shade, biodiversity, and ecological benefits to the city. One of our volunteers, Kevin, has been taking the lead in Chakala to advocate for more scientific pruning practices in his area. With support from Sriganesh in setting up meetings with key individuals, he has been working to ensure that trees are assessed individually and pruned in a way that maintains their balance, preserves long-term health, and retains adequate shade during Mumbaiโ€™s intense summer months. Their efforts have included: ๐ŸŒฑ Engaging local citizens on the importance of scientific pruning ๐ŸŒฑ Bringing in the cityโ€™s only practicing arborist and team to recommend tree-specific pruning methods ๐ŸŒฑ Coordinating with the Gardens Department to encourage implementation of more scientific approaches to pruning The process comes with its own complexities, but Kevin and Sriganesh have continued to navigate them patiently and persistently in the hopes for citywide adoption. We felt their efforts deserved a shoutout ๐ŸŒฟ #WalkingProject
