And now with the uart serial link between the two boards replaced by usb-cdc serial, via the USB Host on the EEP32p4. There's something very satisfying about connecting your own devices via USB-C, albeit only USB2 Full speed...
And now ported up to a suitably sized (7"!) display; 1024x600 pixels, at a nominal 18-20ish FPS, thanks to the ESP32P4! Finally, a price friendly MCU with MIPI!

I’m currently using a VS1838B IR receiver in an unconventional way to demodulate data from the power rail. Although the device is designed for optical infrared signals, it reliably detects and demodulates a 38 kHz carrier present on the rail.

This makes it function as a hybrid solution, capable of receiving both traditional IR transmissions and carrier‑modulated signals injected onto the power line.

One part is missing from the order, Assembly is delayed. It will be a backorder. But the connector choice seems good.
