Very disappointed that Peru electoral authorities didn't show us absolute 50.000% parity for a few minutes 🇵🇪 ☹️

Interesting analysis based on Peru exit polls. Keiko outperforming her 2021 showing in rural areas (maybe let down by Castillo's corruption & incompetence?) Sánchez outperforming Castillo's '21 showing in Lima (reacting against Keiko/congress-led pro-crime laws & backsliding?)

Reports began to run that #MORENA Sen Enrique Inzunza Cázares, sought by the US for #organizedcrime has been detained in San Diego, CA. If true, this is unprecedented--a seating senator is now in custody in the US. The issues #Mexico's government has to deal with will have grown.

When we initially reported in February that Saab was detained, the pushback was enormous. He is chilling at home, he’s totally fine, said his lawyers and associates. Declining to comment is an acceptable response to a journalist. Lying is not.

The local Peru results are wild to analyze. There are departments where the top candidates nationally didn't even place among the top five candidates locally. Large segments of the country will feel completely unrepresented in the second round presidential campaign.

Peru looking increasingly likely to go to a run-off between Keiko Fujimori and Rafael López Aliaga, both right-wing candidates. But Peru is not 'joining' the right-wing turn in Latin America. It already turned right in 2023 under Dina Boluarte & a hyper-powerful congress...
results of Datum's quick count (ignoring electoral authorities to refrain from publishing before voting ends tomorrow) points to a June runoff race between Fujimori and Lopez Aliaga margin of error /- por ciento

Crowds pack the station on opening day of the "Insurgente" train linking Mexico City to Toluca. Travel time drops from two hours to fifty minutes for 90 pesos ($5), and linked to subway. Turns out infrastructure in the public interest is popular—who knew?
