As part of
#UNESCOAfricaWeek 2026 in Paris, the Nigeria Delegation to
@UNESCO organized a session focused on sustainable access to water and sanitation across Africa, bringing together international stakeholders and country representatives to discuss pathways toward
#WaterSecurity and
#SustainableDevelopment.
Representing the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (
@WFEO) and its Water Committee, Ms Lylian Coelho highlighted the urgent need to move from knowledge to action to achieve
#SDG6 and strengthen integrated approaches to water management across the continent.
โThe challenge is not technological, but rather the lack of effective systems to deploy solutions at scale, driven primarily by governance, financing, and human capacity.โ - Lylian Coelho
During the session, she emphasized the importance of engineering
#CapacityBuilding as a cornerstone of sustainable water management and presented WFEOโs 10-year โEngineering Capacity Building for Africa Programmeโ, aimed at strengthening engineering skills, fostering collaboration, and supporting systemic approaches across
#Africa.
The session also facilitated valuable exchanges with representatives from Angola, Ivory Coast, Morocco, Senegal, and Nigeria, reaffirming the importance of regional cooperation, partnerships, innovation, investment, and strong governance frameworks rooted in a human rights-based approach.
