my latest review from @ArtReview_ asia spring issue is also available to read online! this one took quite a long editorial back-and-forth to get published but i'm so happy to see it making it to print. FLOWERS OF BELAU is such a dreamy, composite work 🌺

manual labour as a grounding routine not devoid of hardships and heartbreaks; growing old and learning to savour life in all its joy and sorrow; hands at work, grass, farming as an anticapitalist tool of resistance -

this incredible portrait of a woman in her late 80s also brought to mind the unforgettable hospital scene in soda kazuhiro's INLAND SEA as well as some of haneda sumiko's docs

really sad news but not an unexpected one. i was head of programme at encounters (2021 - 2023), working in a team of 3 ( temps) under extremely poor circumstances. true, funding cuts and austerity are to blame but myopic & toxic leadership is complicit

Violent passions are unleashed at a remote Japanese boarding school in Summer Vacation 1999, a rediscovered classic that offers a strikingly androgynous exploration of teenage yearning and desire. Fri 26 Apr, 20:40 @BFI intro by @whateverren: queereast.org.uk/event/summe…

ICYMI, our just-o'er-the-border neighbours @berwickfilmfest commissioned Alchemy Trustee @whateverren to write on Fujisawa Isao’s Bye Bye Love (1974) as part of their 19th edition last month. A critique, very much, to pique! bfmaf.org/essay/this-transie…

Actually shameful behaviour from @HOME_mcr I’m embarrassed for you Art is political, as is so much of the art you display/feature at what is a publicly funded Manchester multi arts centre

thinking back to this silly little announcement ten shorts! all world premieres! what a concept!
When a festival upholds this, countless opportunities are missed while filmmakers hold out false hope. I understand that festivals feel they need to do whatever they can to attract audiences but I can almost guarantee the premiere status of a short has never sold a ticket.

Great thread on festival premiere status, a concept that should have been ditched long ago — especially for short films which have slim to no avenues for distribution outside of festivals.
In November of this year, @visionsdureel contacted me about my submission, saying they were potentially interested but would have to make final decisions later. All good, nice that they liked the piece. 1/

it was a truly rewarding exercise to historically contextualise the film while also surveying its prescient and contemporary representation of queer sexuality and non conforming gender identity also thanks to @CollabJapanFilm for introducing me to the film! [2/2]

was blown away by the recently found late-Japanese New Wave gem BYE BYE LOVE (1974) by Isao Fujisawa @berwickfilmfest: a queer, psychedelic fever dream about a man who shoots a cop and goes on the lam with his genderfluid shoplifting lover through the countryside.

In light of Berlinale’s completely unhinged (yet unsurprising to anyone who has been following Germany’s behavior in recent months) statements, I think this ‘bears’ repeating…
in light of the recent TIFF and Oberhausen statements, I'd like to note that it's film festivals whose existence depend on filmmakers, and not the other way around. Building community, engaged programmers, setting up screenings? ALL ESSENTIAL. Festivals? It really depends.
