Hi ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿผ @wildforbees here, ready to show you some of my #bumblebee #nestbox research this week! To start, hereโ€™s an active B. perplexus colony-the guard bees were quick to act when I opened the lid (video was a few sec after I stepped away to catch the action from a safe distance!)

Amazing news! What a fantastic job by the Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory and #teambutterfly. And the discovery of a previously unknown 5th instar. We're on the road to recovery. Now we just have to get funding to do the rest. @NCC_CNC
Good news: #teambutterfly is having so much success rearing Mottled Duskywings, I had to release a surplus of stock back to their natal site today! @Conservatory_ has also confirmed this species has 5 larval instars! #speciesatrisk #Butterfly #naturalhistory

Well this was a fun surprise on a rainy afternoon! I put up 5 #nestboxes on #WLU campus with @GrowShareRepeat and @LaurierGreen and one of them is occupied! The #bumblebees didnโ€™t want to cooperate when I looked inside so species is still TBD! What species do you think it is?! ๐Ÿ

Some good news about some super rare bumblebees - B richardsiellus was known from probably < 10 individuals world-wide, but surveys last summer by Kunming Institute of Botany and Beijing's Institute of Zoology found it to be locally common in just a few sites in SE Tibet!

Although itโ€™s now officially summer, it still feels like spring to see all of these nest-searching queens! Iโ€™m hoping some of them decide to live in the nest boxes, but for now, I wait.. โฐ๐Ÿคž๐Ÿผ #bumblebees #nestboxes #bees #buzz #nestsearching #queens #bombusimpatiens #summer

#Bombusimpatiens in her new home! ๐Ÿ  This is my #endoscope camera, and how I use it in the underground #nestboxes. Without the camera, it would be VERY difficult to determine if the nest box is occupied this early in the season (as there is little to no worker traffic yet) ๐Ÿ

Thanks for a great #PollinatorWeek2019! We're very proud to support bees every day, especially now that @uofg is a #beecitycampus. It's important to support bees in an urban setting, and you can see how well it can work with this #bumblebee worker I saw just outside the gym!

Last week, we received a generous donation of 200 milk crates from @SaputoInc to support our ground-nesting #bee research project. Some of these crates have already been put to good use to plant zucchini plants whose flowers will feed squash bees later this summer #PollinatorWeek

I SPY with my little ๐Ÿ‘€ something that is #black and #yellow!! Thatโ€™s a common eastern #bumblebee queen in one of my underground #nestboxes! Stay tuned for a video of her running around in there, as well as how I am able to record all of her activity! ๐Ÿ๐ŸŒฑ #pollinatorweek

You might call me something of an ANDRENA-line junkie! Andrena is a group of bees (aka mining bees) with many early emerging species, making them great pollinators for apples. Most of the bees I have seen are Andrenids! #pollinatorweek #pollinatorweek2019 #NativeBees

I followed this #queen to (what I suspect is) her nest site - and it was ~ 5m away from some of my #nestboxes.. ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ Oh well! Iโ€˜ll be watching to see if she starts bringing in pollen, or laying eggs to produce workers, males, and even new queens! ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ‘‘ #bumblebees #pollinatorweek

Happy #PollinatorWeek! ๐ŸYesterday I opened up an above ground nest boxes and found a Common Eastern #BumbleBee queen inside! This species is known for nesting underground, so it was an awesome find! Hopefully when I go back next Iโ€˜ll find some brood cells! #nestingecology #bees
