Geez, a good reminder for me to not have my M1 MacBook Air plugged into my Ethernet line via Thunderbolt 3 dock next time we have a thunderstorm (i.e. tomorrow).
protecting your PC from storms is not just about the power outlet.
A Reddit user claims lightning hit their apartment complex, traveled through the coax / internet line, killed the router, and then cooked the motherboard through Ethernet.
• Router destroyed
• Motherboard damaged near Ethernet
• Burn marks near the wall
• Surge likely came through the internet line
• Ethernet carried it into the PC
• Power surge protection alone may not save you
• Coax and Ethernet need protection too
A lot of people only think about plugging the PC into a surge protector.
But if your modem, router, coax line, or Ethernet cable gets hit, that surge can still find a path into your system.
