🌍 #SB64 is officially underway in Bonn. One conversation I’ll be closely following is #ClimateMobility and how climate-induced displacement, migration, and human mobility are being reflected in negotiations. From drought and desertification in the Sahel to flooding in vulnerable communities, climate impacts are increasingly shaping livelihoods, security, and human movement across Africa. #UNFCCC #SB64Bonn #ClimateMigration #ClimateJustice #Adaptation #Resilience #Youth4Climate

Following the plenary sessions, participants were divided into breakout groups. I had the opportunity to participate in Group 2, where we engaged in robust discussions around youth solutions, innovation, and climate action pathways.

Day 1 at the Nigeria Youth Climate Summit, I had the opportunity to speak on the critical nexus between Climate, Peace, and Security. One of the key points I highlighted was that climate change is not just an environmental challenge it is increasingly becoming a peace and security concern. Across the Sahel region, prolonged droughts, desertification, and ecosystem degradation are reducing access to water, grazing lands, and other natural resources that communities depend on for survival. #NigeriaYouthClimateSummit #ClimatePeaceSecurity #ClimateAction #ClimateChampions #YouthLeadership

The way forward may not be choosing one over the other but ensuring that both work hand in hand. Strong data systems, effective communication channels, informed communities, and responsive institutions are all interconnected elements of a sustainable framework for preventing violence and building safer, more resilient societies. The question is no longer whether we need these interventions, but how we can better coordinate them to create meaningful and lasting impact.

Conversations are shifting toward a critical realization: Nigeria needs a more harmonized and integrated data system that enables stakeholders to identify risks, detect emerging threats, and respond proactively before violence, insecurity, or attacks occur within communities. Strengthening data collection, analysis, and information-sharing mechanisms across government institutions, civil society organizations, security agencies, and local communities can significantly enhance early warning and early response systems.

Grassroots sensitization is essential because communities are often the first to observe warning signs of conflict, violence, or social unrest. Equipping citizens with the knowledge to recognize and report risks can strengthen community resilience and improve local response mechanisms. Advocacy, on the other hand, is necessary to influence policies, mobilize resources, and ensure that decision-makers prioritize investments in early warning systems, peacebuilding initiatives, and community-led security approaches.

We need more countries to sign the Kampala declaration and move beyond frameworks to implementation. @UNmigration

Session summary: my segment centered on the impact of climate change on food security, peace security in Nigeria and beyond. Going further to the current heatwaves Europe is experiencing, currently it has hit a record breaking high above 35 degrees Celsius and could be more, but what are the mitigation strategies in place. Coming back to Nigeria: how well informed are our pastoralists and farmers when it comes to weather patterns, currently rain falls patterns have shifted from what we know and what are the mitigation strategies in place to keep them informed. I Çan keep going on how this has also caused displacement amongst families resulting to climate mobility. What about the Sahel region they experience increasing drought forcing them to move and source for alternative livelihoods from the traditional way they use to know.

Ihad the rare privilege of attending the Regional Conference on Climate Mobility earlier this month, where government representatives, development partners, researchers, civil society actors, and community leaders came together to shape Africa’s collective voice ahead of SB64 and COP31.

Kindly engage with my latest article on the rampant use of the female identity as a tool for comedy in Nigeria. In it, I explore how common skit narratives from the “gold digger” and “nagging wife” to the portrayal of pregnant women as burdens may seem harmless, but often reinforce deeper gender stereotypes. This is not a critique of creativity, but an invitation to reflect on the kind of stories we normalize through humor. I would value your thoughts, perspectives, and experiences on this. medium.com/@vickiiwilliams0/… #GenderEquality #MediaRepresentation #NigerianComedy #FeministPerspective #SocialImpact
