I am passionate about education. Working in & with schools has been my life. But for my daughter @bloglibby it was school itself that was the barrier to her learning, not her autism. She found the pressured, punitive state secondary culture so stress-inducing that she stopped being able to function. She is extremely capable and presented with no behaviour issues in school. She is not an over-indulged young person. I am not a lazy parent who doesn’t value school. Teachers are not to blame. The system is not working and unless this is recognised, children like my daughter will continue to be unable to tolerate it. Since being out of the system her mental health has improved beyond recognition. She has taught herself Spanish, debating, music theory and music production, song-writing, singing, piano, and knows a huge amount about the world and people, and most importantly herself. And that’s on top of co-authoring 4 best-selling books, giving conference speeches, webinars etc. And yet no state secondary could be found to accommodate her needs. Whatever we are doing to our nation’s schools in the name of improvement it is not working for thousands of our more sensitive children who can achieve incredible things if provided with the right things - respect, supportive relationships and just a little autonomy and trust.
🔴 ‘You feel like a failure’: the parents driven to despair by their children’s refusal to go to school. As an attendance crisis grips British education, desperate families struggle to find solutions - with some choosing to go private telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/02…

Over the past few months I have been thinking more about provocations and loose parts play. A slightly more curated experience for younger learners. @EYTagteam @EYTalking @kymscott5

It’s been great you being around! Loved the nuggets of EY wisdom. Safe flight and see you soon.

Thank you to everyone who has looked after me, especially @RajLadva @LouNerd3 @megjking31 & others who aren’t on Twitter! But I couldn’t have done any of it without the support of/collaboration with the amazing @winderley Eternally grateful!

So proud to have been a part of this; talking all things STEAM in EY.
So much lovely feedback from kind & enthusiastic practitioners during my time in Thailand but this email made me feel so wonderful! It came from someone who attended the day on Slow STEAM experiences that I put on with @winderley

A huge thank you to @BlogLibby and @kymscott5 for sharing their journey of a mother and daughter navigating their way through autism. Many takeaways but what an incredible bond you have with each other. 😊

Lucky children in the EYs at @SHBriverside to have such a beautiful place to learn. And lucky me to get to spend time working with the school!

The training sessions my daughter and I have started delivering together on the autistic experience of education really do come from the heart & recall very difficult times so this feedback just fills my heart. ❤️
I’m blown away by this training! So insightful & thought-provoking, with a wealth of ideas for the learning environment, the 4 C’s, how connection and empathy is key and how to help children manage stress ⭐️ I owe a million thanks to you ❤️

Yes, it’s that time of year when u have forgotten where you left your lanyard or your laptop password! Having said that, NOW is the time to retune yourself to all things EY. @kymscott5 returns to Bangkok during Term 1 to support you and your team through the highs and lows of EY.

It’s sad, but thinking of moving over to #ThreadsApp. Twitter is not what it used to be for all things #earlyyears @EYTalking @EYTagteam. Anyone else? @kymscott5 @BirdsallMaeve @helenjwc @RajLadva
