One of the finest database groups in the country. We work on building next generation database systems, data integration, data science, and database theory.
We're thrilled to share that @HangdongZ79542 has won the 2026 @SIGMODConf Jim Gray Doctoral Dissertation Award! His thesis "Advancing Join Algorithms for Real-world Queries" makes DB theory practical by presenting join algorithms for real-world queries. We are so proud of you!
Huge congrats to Yifei Yang on completing his PhD in high-performance OLAP systems! 🎉 During his PhD, Yifei researched several novel techniques on distributed DBMS query execution. Now, he’s at @databricks on the query optimization team!

Today's Postgres vs. World Seminar Speaker: Dr. Xiangyao Yu (@xiangyao_yu) will present the architecture of the @siriusgpudb GPU-native database system. Zoom talk open to public at 4:30pm ET. YouTube video available after: db.cs.cmu.edu/events/pg-vs-w…
Congrats to Ling Zhang for defending & completing her PhD! During her PhD, she specialized in in log processing and management, structured text search, and database query processing! She is now at @databricks on their Query Optimization team!
Belated congratulations to @kkanelliss for completing his PhD in ML-powered tuning for improving the performance of data and memory-tiering systems. He is now at AWS working on LLM-powered data systems!
🏆🏆👏👏 Special congrats to the VLDB endowment award winners:
• Early Career Research Contribution Award: @xiangyao_yu
• Women in Database Research Award: @ang3ela
• Test of Time Award: “How good are query optimizers, really?” by @ViktorLeis@peterabcz@TU_Muenchen@CWInl

Honored to receive the #VLDB2025 Early Career Award this year. Grateful to @wiscdb, my students, collaborators, mentors, and family for making this journey possible. Excited to keep pushing the boundaries of database systems!

Prof @xiangyao_yu has won the VLDB 2025 Early Career Award for his work on disaggregated cloud DBMSs! Congrats to him and his students @scarlet0619, Elena Milkai, Yifei Yang, and @WjhHippo for their incredible contributions! Wisc DB is so proud of you ❤️
Congrats to @bwyogatama for defending his thesis on GPU data analytics! Recently, he’s been leading @siriusgpudb, which is a GPU-native SQL engine built on top of @duckdb. After graduation, he’s headed to @nvidia!
Austen's second paper, "Circuits and Formulas for Datalog over Semirings", studies circuits and formulas for provenance polynomials of Datalog programs. Studying provenance in Datalog is practically important because circuits are used in provenance tracking systems!
Paris' group's paper, "Output-sensitive Conjunctive Query Evaluation", presents a new algorithm for multi-way joins, which avoids large intermediate results when the output is small. This approach marks the first breakthrough in over 40 years over the Yannakakis algorithm!
Congrats to Elena Milkai on defending her thesis on real-time transactional analytics! One of her projects, HERMES (VLDB 2025), enables data consolidation across transactional and analytical engines without system changes. After grad, she’s headed to @salesforce’s DB team!
