Dr. Walter Montanera, a giant in the field of neuroradiology, passed away today. He was a teacher, a role model, and a mentor to so many of us. When we used to talk, as trainees, about who we wanted to be like when we were in practice, the answer was always 'Walter'. He was kind, humble, clear headed, and above all, pragmatic. He made complex pathology seem simple and brought a calmness to the procedure and reporting rooms. With Walter, there was no ego and no drama. There was just a strong work ethic and a quiet commitment to doing his best. It was contagious and I know that I owe much of my success to his guidance. For those of you who did not know him, if you have a loved one who has had a stroke treated with clot removal, you have Walter to thank for that. He was an unassuming pioneer who saved countless lives. He will be dearly missed.
