Yesterday in the UK, a judge ruled against four direct action activists who damaged Israeli military assets owned by Elbit Systems in 2024. They are facing years of jail time and were sentenced for an “act of terrorism”, for attempting to slow down the weapons production and movement from the UK to Israel where these weapons and technology are used in daily acts of terrorism and genocidal violence against Palestinians in Gaza. We live in a time where the people of conscience who try to stop genocide are labeled as terrorists and the war profiteers and politicians who make the laws to defend them enjoy full impunity.

You can vehemently disagree with Palestine Action activists goals, whilst simultaneously be horrified a judge can decide AFTER a conviction if it was terrorism related amd double a sentence. Being able to class an offense as terrorism AFTER conviction without charging them with terrorism should bother everyone. Destroying private 'israeli' weapons used in a genocide gets you a longer sentence than child grooming in occupied Britain. For the first time, activists are sentenced as 'terrorists' for property damage. This will go down as one of the most unjust cases in British history.

I keep thinking about this picture of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya from yesterday during a court hearing. He has remained in Israeli custody since this abduction from Gaza in December 2024. He stayed back to care for his patients and community as a paediatrician and as the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in Gaza. And for this, Israel continues to punish and hold him in their torture camps.

Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya’s message to the court today as relayed by his attorney: “I am a pediatrician. I provide medical care to patients, the injured, and vulnerable people in the Gaza Strip. I have carried out my work in accordance with international law and humanitarian standards. My detention is unjust and arbitrary.”
