The "problem" with being a good mentor is that you don't get $$ from grants or the institution for mentoring. This will also take time away from mentoring the people in your lab or working on your manuscripts/grants (the things that count toward promotion).

Grad students who wonder why there remains toxicity in academia and why DEI progress has stalled:
One answer? Even when you have people that are well-intentioned/informed, it takes so much work to get academia to work on a basic level such that improvements are not prioritized.
