Today's @ONS stats continue a recent picture of “stalling” life expectancy improvements - seen since 2015.
Most areas across Great Britain have experienced a fall in life expectancy.
With some of the most deprived areas having the lowest expectancy.

Today’s life expectancy data for Great Britain shows a decline in most areas during 2021 to 2023, compared with the pre #COVID19 period of 2017 to 2019.
This suggests we are yet to see a recovery from the decrease in life expectancy we saw during the pandemic.
The Tobacco and Vapes Bill's second reading has just passed by 415 votes to just 47 🙌
A massive political endorsement of what is likely to be the most important piece of public health legislation in over a decade. Now onto the committee stage.
Tomorrow is the second reading of the Tobacco and Vapes Bill.
The bill gives MPs the opportunity to ensure the UK leads the world in tackling tobacco use and preventing disease for decades to come. 🧵

Also crucial is ongoing funding to help people quit.
This is usually through the public health grant, which has been cut by 28% per person since 2015/16.
The previous gov had earmarked an *additional* £70m/yr over the next 5yrs for quit services - continuing this is vital.
Finally, the bill provides plenty to help tackle the worrying increase in kids who vape.
To paraphrase @CMO_England, the following remains:
vaping is safer than smoking
but if you don't smoke, don't vape
and it's unacceptable to market vapes to kids.

Sir Jonathan Van-Tam says public health has been "grossly underfunded for years" and praised the efforts of local teams during the pandemic.
Public health should be "hardwired into every decision that a councils takes."

In case you missed in among all the news on the tobacco and vapes bill, @NHSDigital have today released the 2023/24 National Child Measurement Programme data.
Tl,dr: #obesity rates trending downwards in year 6 but rising again in reception, with inequalities as wide as ever. 🧵
Really welcome to see the introduction of the tobacco and vapes bill.
Tobacco kills 2 in 3 smokers and is responsible for over 400,000 hospital admissions a year.
The bill includes the smokefree generation as well as new provisions for smokefree spaces & retailer licensing.
🧵
We’re introducing the Tobacco and Vapes Bill to protect the public, NHS and economy from the harms of smoking.
Our plans include banning smoking outside schools, children’s playgrounds and hospitals.
