On World Bee Day I am grateful for these small but mighty creatures for playing a crucial role in keeping our meadows, woodlands, heathlands and hedgerows alive, flying incredible distances for pollen and nectar, pollinating trees and flowers as they go.
Nearly 90% of wild flowering plants and more than 75% of food crops depend on animal pollination, making these creatures essential to the ecosystems and food systems we rely on every day.
Yet, these vital pollinators are increasingly threatened by human activities. Protecting them means protecting biodiversity, food security, and the future of generations to come.
World Bee Day, reminds us that protecting pollinators means protecting life itself. By caring for bees, we nurture nature, strengthen food systems, and help build a more sustainable and hunger-free world.
Remembering in prayer on this day Brother Adam Kerhle OSB (1898 - 1996) of Buckfast Abbey, a world authority on bee keeping and breeding.
