We need further qualitative work (@ASKSNIFF) understanding the vital interplay between parents/carers and health care professionals regarding the acutely unwell child as there will continue to be serious untoward events if we don't acknowledge this challenge.

Let's develop these resources WITH parents instead of just for them.

'It may be beneficial if further research and observational studies are carried out to examine how listening to parents [or taking on board parents’ views/concerns] impacts on clinical decision making and recognition of the sick infant/child.'
Our new report shows that recognising serious illness in infants & young children remains a key patient safety risk across the NHS. Despite advances in treatment, infections remain the leading cause of death in children under the age of 5. Read the report >hsib.org.uk/investigations-a…

Thanks Dave - there are some Australian approaches I think - not sure if @andrewjtagg @DrSimonCraig could help here. One of the challenges is that ‘safety netting’ itself has a wide variety of meanings This needs updating but some leads here: bmjopen.bmj.com/content/5/12…

Red-flag symptoms were reported in 81 (6·0%) of 1349 patients. Only two were felt to have been delayed in presenting and neither of these patients was admitted to hospital It's reassuring that red flag features were not dismissed by parents @ASKSNIFF @bestbeginnings

With a child population of over one million, this department is absolutely necessary to ensure that children are properly considered, across all departments. Without #DCYAMustStay , it won't happen, and there's still much to be done.
Another voice of authority cautions against the abolition of our Minister for Children #DCYAMustStay irishtimes.com/news/social-a…
