Arguably the coolest PhD project ever. We are so excited to see these reef mantas getting detected on so many of our receivers positioned on #SouthAfrica's east coast!
In Mozambique & South Africa, new research has revealed the first recorded cross-border migrations of reef manta rays, uncovering their reliance on protected sanctuaries in the process. More in Nakia Cullain's blog below.

If you're studying #sharks and #rays in #SouthernAfrica, then this symposium is for you! Next year's event is being hosted in the small rural town of Makhanda in #SouthAfrica. Abstract submissions will open in the new year, so watch this space! 🦈
This little project on eagle rays has seen our equipment slowly creeping up the west coast of #SouthAfrica, which has always been a bit of a dead zone for us. In the words of Hannibal Smith, 'We love it when a plan comes together!'
#TeamFish#telemetry
Michelle Soekoe & team (Reel Science Co.), with @ATAP_ZA, have deployed the 1st acoustic receiver array on the west coast of South Africa. Strategically placed from St Helena to Velddrif, they are a major milestone for telemetry in the region.

We're excited to announce that the 7th International Conference on Fish Telemetry website is now live and abstract submission is open. Spread the word please.🐟event.fourwaves.com/7thicft/…
Learning more about the ecology of a #linefish species is only as good as knowledge of its biology (i.e. diet, reproduction, age, growth).
#6samls has 6 #SouthernAfrica life history talks lined up, focusing on species such as west coast steenbras, dusky kob & silver kob 🐟
Join OTN for study hall! Every Thursday, the OTN data team works with peers from across the globe to answer telemetry data questions and help problem-solve! DM us for the participation link.
41 days until the #6samls 🎣
Researchers students from 14 different organisations will be giving >50 presentations, with talks ranging from movement studies, to fisheries, to fisher engagement, and so much more!

Fish telemetry postdoc - an amazing opportunity with excellent people! To examine fish movements and activity from acoustic telemetry data on brook charr, during three years in a small dimictic lake. The annual stipend could be up to $65,000 (CDN). e-mail : andrea.bertolo@uqtr.ca
One of favourite #SouthAfrican conferences to attend, and such a brilliant event for learning more about linefish research in the country.

44 days to until the 6th Southern African Marine #Linefish Symposium starts!
Here, researchers, students, managers science communicators from southern Africa share results work together to identify research gaps to help with management 🎣

DYK that #SouthAfrica has tons of endemic rays species, meaning they are found nowhere else in the world! One of these is the blue stingray, a ray that moves by moving its fins in a wave‐like manner (i.e. undulations).
📷@murray_taryn
The most incredible result is that one individual moved almost 500 km from its tagging site, which is the largest movement EVER recorded for a benthic undulatory ray in the entire world! Isn’t technology amazing?!
