ATF is proposing to clarify Special Occupational Taxpayer requirements under the National Firearms Act. FFLs will owe one SOT fee per business activity (manufacturing, importing, or dealing) at each location, regardless of the number of Gun Control Act licenses held for that activity at the same premises. This provides licensees with clear, consistent guidance on their NFA tax obligations. Read the proposal and comment at federalregister.gov/document…. #NewEra

ATF is proposing to eliminate the requirement that NFA applicants send a copy of their application and Responsible Person Questionnaire (ATF Form 5320.23) to their local Chief Law Enforcement Officer. This longstanding requirement has faced repeated legal challenges and has not delivered meaningful public safety benefits. The change would simplify the process for law-abiding applicants. Thirteen years ago today, two terrorists detonated homemade bombs near the finish line of the Boston Marathon, killing three and injuring hundreds. ATF was part of the law enforcement response, recovering pressure cooker bomb fragments while processing a 12-block crime scene. ATF's National Tracing Center traced the shooters’ firearm and Special Agents helped corner Dzhokhar Tsarnaev in a Watertown boat during the final manhunt takedown. ATF’s expertise helped deliver justice after one of the worst terrorist attacks on U.S. soil since 9/11. Read more at atf.gov/our-history/historic…. #WeAreATF #BostonMarathon

Straw purchasing a firearm is a serious federal crime. Buying a gun for someone who is legally prohibited from owning one is not a harmless favor; it directly fuels violence and endangers public safety. Penalties are severe with up to 15 years in federal prison, and up to 25 years if the firearm is later used in a felony, act of terrorism, or drug trafficking crime. Don’t do it. The consequences are not worth the risk. Learn more about the crime of straw purchasing at atf.gov/firearms/dont-lie-ot…. #DontLieForTheOtherGuy

DYK? The ATF’s National Firearms Act Division handled a record-breaking 1.5 million applications comprising more than 5.8 million firearms in fiscal year 2025. Thanks to process upgrades and the widespread adoption of eForms, wait times have plummeted dramatically. eForm 4 approvals were slashed by an average of five months compared to older paper-based timelines, and many are now getting approved in just days. We're on track to break those records again this year. See current averages at atf.gov/resource-center/curr….
