Big words from someone who doesn't live with large/dangerous wildlife. I spoke to someone in Zim today who dealt with a death of a local person by an elephant. Tragic & sad but not uncommon. Feelings in community are of anger, sadness & frustration. Your words wouldn't sit well.

The aim of the Isibaya Project is to promote the conservation/protection of leopards in Zimbabwe. By compensating local farmers for the loss of livestock the project hopes to reduce human/wildlife conflict there. youtu.be/Qy2crqlQTms

When we get to a stage where scientists publicly sharing information on their area of expertise is seen as 'stirring the pot', I think we are in dangerous times for evidence led decision making
Amy I think you knew when you went on GMB you were going to stir the pot. Animal activists get far more abuse than you every day. Animals have no voice but ours. We won't stop. Ever.

Trophy hunting bans are one of many examples of misplaced idealism leading to perverse outcomes by devaluing wildlife and their habitat so that the land will simply be converted. CITES has a very good position on this that governments should read before passing legislation
27 Mar 2023
To clarify CITES' position on hunting trophies, the below text comes from CITES CoP17 that took place in Johannesburg in 2016 and can be viewed in full here: cites.org/sites/default/file…

Thanks @CITES for making your position clear!

Poaching takes two basic forms in Africa: subsistence and commercial. Yet the things poachers traffic can vary widely. Yes ivory and rhino horn but also bushmeat, timber, fish, pangolin, succulent plants and even honey. Check out Patrol and subscribe! youtu.be/rXVWVHcfs8Q

Anti-poaching teams not only look for poachers but the wire snares they set to trap game. These snares kill indiscriminately and the animals die horrible, lingering deaths. That’s why we are proud to support the efforts of our friends at the Sidinda Conservancy. #antipoaching

"For much of the animal rights and welfare brigade, African voices don’t count when it comes to African wildlife, especially if it is at odds with the romanticised Disney image that pulls the heartstrings of suburbanites and keeps the donations rolling in."
My take on the ill-conceived and hypocritical UK ban on trophy hunting imports that will undermine the conservation goals it claims to seek to achieve ... UK trophy hunting import ban – some animals are more equal than others dailymaverick.co.za/opinioni…

30 years ago, the very large majority of these game ranches were cattle ranches, devoid of vegetation, collapsed disfunctional ecosystems with very low local employment. Unless you've personally witnessed the change, you would not understand how incredible pro biodiversity TH is

Think this is a very important point. Even for those who possess advanced degrees having first hand knowledge enhances understanding. There is a human element to this discussion. Understanding the perspective of the people who stand to benefit (or lose) is important.

Good threads abound today on Twitter!
Our CEO, Dr Chris Brown: Botswana and Namibia were rated the most successful [in terms of megafauna conservation], Zimbabwe was fifth, Zambia ninth, and Angola, after decades of civil war, 40th. The UK was 123rd. 1/ neweralive.na/posts/conserva…

Good thread @WilliamJohnOwen
When considering #trophyhunting bans should we not consider the viability of the alternatives before we impose an import ban? Thread Kafue National Park in Zambia covers an area of 22,400km2 for comparison Wales 20,742km2. 1/9

👇Highly respected conservationist ⁦@MaxiPiaLouis1⁩ adds a valuable (and often overlooked) Namibian perspective to the complex & emotive issue of #TrophyHunting. Shouldn't the views of those directly impacted arguably carry more weight than the views of those who aren't?
