This #MonitoringMonday, discover the vital role EPA’s air quality experts play in wildfire response! Last month, @EPA Region 9 and @forestservice deployed to Arizona, where EPA air expert Stella Cook took swift action responding to the Indian Creek and Bronco Wildfires impacting White Mountain Apache and San Carlos Apache Tribal lands. 🌳🏞️ When wildfires spark, air experts like Stella are on the front lines providing essential smoke forecasts, air quality monitoring, and community engagement. Their mission? To protect the health and safety of communities and firefighters from smoke exposure.👨‍🚒 Want to dive deeper into this role and get tips for protecting your home from wildfire smoke? Notice changes in your breathing or haze in the sky? Wildfire smoke can significantly affect air quality, visibility, and cause a range of negative health effects – as we know all too well from this past summer in the Midwest! Bringing together meteorological computer models, real-time air quality data and local weather conditions, scientists can predict future air pollution levels. This #MonitoringMonday, we’re showcasing our expert EPA meteorologists who work closely with partners like @forestservice and @IDEMNews to share timely, critical air quality information with Great Lakes communities. @AIRNow #AirNow

#DYK research shows that expanding the “burn window” into late summer and early fall can better manage invasive species AND reduce the impact of smoke emissions on public health? Studies from Kansas State University and Oklahoma State University show that burns during the growing season (late August and early September) can reduce the concentration and impact of the smoke on downwind communities. To stay updated on smoke impacts from these late season burns, check the @AIRNow #FireAndSmokeMap, created in partnership with the @forestservice.

✅Make outdoor activities shorter and less intense. ✅It’s OK to be active outdoors when the AQI is Code Orange but take more breaks. ✅Watch for symptoms such as coughing or shortness of breath. If you experience symptoms, go indoors.
