🌍 Why this matters:
Our findings challenge the narrative that FinTechs are the main enabler of terrorist financing. But we can't be complacent - the future is uncertain.
What did we find?
- Traditional methods (banks, shell companies) are still king (93% of cases).
- FinTechs play a small role (7%): mostly crypto & online payments (e.g., PayPal).
- No sign of advanced techniques (mixers, tumblers).
🚨 Bridging the Knowledge Gap in Terrorist Financing & FinTechs 🚨
With the rise of financial technologies (#FinTechs), there's growing concern they might be misused by terrorists. But how big is this problem, really? 🤔
Our new study takes a closer look: tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.…
💡 Key knowledge gaps:
1 - Speculation vs. evidence: Are terrorists really using crypto & NFTs? We need data, not assumptions!
2 - Traditional methods dominate research, but what about FinTech adoption?
3 - Why aren't terrorists using these tools more?
Terrorist financing: How far has the technological shift gone?
According to our research in @ctc_eu_project, 93% terrorist financiers still rely on traditional methods. But new technologies are emerging.

Facilitators in #Terrorists cells had a strong link to market-based crimes, playing a key role in #TerroristAttack. Centrality metrics alone may not capture the full complexity of an actor’s role.
Actors with 'tactical' roles, responsible for attacks, had lower involvement in criminal activities, particularly violent crimes. @WeAreTandF@ascterrorism
Happy to announce that my paper, written with @BrightProfessor and @AlbertoAziani, titled 'The criminal activities and operational roles of Australian
neo-jihadists: a network perspective' is finally published in Global Crime today!
