Poet; lecturer; Victorianist; singer; Scottish dancer; nature lover; wine or tea, that is the question; the sea, the sea; land of the mountain & the flood.
Hello poets! Thought I was going to break my promise today as I pursued a path to a dead end yesterday, but I changed poets (!!) & this has just arrived. Phew! See what you think. Looking forward to catching up with you all over a cuppa βοΈπ@TopTweetTuesday@MatthewMCSmith
ALT Wader
After Elizabeth Bishop
It patrols the perimeter
of sea-and-sand
on sedge-stalk legs.
A godwit, I think.
No panic here, but
calm authority.
Always probing, probing.
From my dune nest
observation is
almost painful.
I sense the sharpness,
the depth.
But like a needle
piercing a point
on a troubled meridian,
I feel the twinge
of connection,
then the release,
and my world finds
a new equilibrium.

This is awful. The last ever Denby Pottery going to the kiln. Why is there not uproar? Whereβs the government in this?? We all have Denby in our homes, in family heirlooms, as our history and now itβs closing through lack of support, such a sad sad day. #SaveDenby@denbypottery
Congratulations to #MirraAndreeva, who's decisively come of age. She has a sparky personality & a tremendous game. Felicitations (hardly commiserations on this occasion) also to #MajaChwalinska who's charmed us all. I dare to hope the grass might suit her...? @Wimbledon
I knew #AnthonyHead primarily as Uther Pendragon (though was aware he'd been in Buffy). He was stern, inflexible & often cruel in that role. The revelation was seeing a Merlin blooper reel in which it became clear he was a giggler of the 1st order. Quite obviously a lovely man π
It's important not to set too much store by poetry comps for poetic self-esteem, but on the other hand, it's undeniably gratifying when someone responds carefullly & positively to your work. THIS has happened! indigodreamspublishing.com/cβ¦ Thank you so much Victoria Gatehouse & IDP! π
We are now in a weird era where a guy gets publicly shamed for running his sprinklers on a Tuesday, while a data center the size of a Costco quietly drains a reservoir so AI can generate a picture of your cat as a medieval knight. And the data center gets a tax incentive for it.
In my unexceptional but not embarrassing 'career' as a poet, I'd say that the proudest moments haven't necessarily come from winning things, but from reading my work in a general context (e.g. a variety show) & getting an enthusiastic response from the audience of non-poets.
ALT No tears in the writer, no tears in the reader. No surprise for the writer, no surprise for the reader. For me the initial delight is in the surprise of remembering something I didn't know I knew. I am in a place, in a situation, as if I had materialized from cloud or risen out of the ground. There is a glad recognition of the long lost and the rest follows. Step by step the wonder of unexpected supply keeps growing.

My garden has been in full bloom this week, which is a great excuse for a poetic photoshoot πΌ
