#Diabetes is better managed together. 👉 Ask how you can support the people in your life with diabetes. 👂 Listen to what they need—or do not need—from you. 🚫 Remember, blaming and shaming is not helpful. bit.ly/40QWn5o #WorldDiabetesDay

Horrific scenes from Rufaida school in #Gaza where many mothers and children queuing at a malnutrition treatment point were killed and injured in an airstrike today.   At least two health staff of @UNICEF partner were also killed.   Our deepest condolences to the families and their loved one.   This attack serves as yet another stark reminder of the immense toll being inflicted on children and mothers in Gaza. They are not targets; they must be protected at all times.   These attacks against children must stop now.

Today, we honour all of those whose lives were changed by the residential and day school systems: those who survived, those who never came home, and those who carry the generational impact of this legacy. 🧡 Every day is a good day for #TruthAndReconciliation, not just Sept 30.

Every child matters. Tomorrow, on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, let's reflect on and remember the inexcusable harm done to generations of children by the residential school system. Artwork shared from @emilykewageshig on IG

Our findings signal the importance of reinforcing case finding to identify wasting, effective treatment of most children who have wasting in community settings, timely referral to NRUs for children with SAM and clinical complications, and improving quality of care at NRUs.

1 in 11 people worldwide faced hunger in 2023, 1 in 5 in Africa. The latest @UN report shows that the hunger numbers have been stubbornly high for three consecutive years, as global crises deepen: bit.ly/4de8Raj The substantial investment required to produce healthy, safe and sustainable food is far less than the cost to economies and societies of not taking action.

Six environmental samples of variant poliovirus type 2 have been detected from Khan Younis and Deir al Balah in #Gaza. No paralytic cases have been detected. @WHO, the Ministry of Health, @UNICEF, @UNRWA and partners are conducting a risk assessment on the scope of poliovirus spread and the necessary response to stop any further spread, including prompt vaccination campaigns. Prior to the conflict, #polio vaccination rates in Gaza were optimal. The decimation of the health system, lack of security, access obstruction, constant population displacement, shortages of medical supplies, poor quality of water and weakened sanitation are increasing the risk of vaccine-preventable diseases, including polio. This poses a risk for children and creates the perfect environment for diseases like polio to spread. A ceasefire is essential to allow an effective response.

Nearly 3,000 children are at risk of death from malnutrition in Gaza. Hospitals are destroyed, treatments have stopped and supplies are scant. UNICEF stands ready to provide nutrition supplies, but safe humanitarian access and a ceasefire are needed NOW.unicef.org/press-releases/al…

.@WHO deplores the airstrike on Sunday night in Rafah that reportedly killed 45 displaced people sheltering in tents. The injured were brought for treatment to the already overwhelmed WHO-supported trauma stabilisation point as well as to other field hospitals in Rafah. As violence in Rafah continues escalating, almost a million displaced people are once again in search of safety that doesn’t exist in #Gaza. The ongoing closure of the Rafah border, lack of fuel and aid getting into and across Gaza, and frequent mission delays and denials have choked our ability to support the health system at a time when operations should be rapidly growing to meet the rising needs. Only one third of Gaza’s hospitals remain even partially functional, and are struggling to meet needs due to lack of adequate supplies, equipment, fuel and their exhausted staff. Open the Rafah crossing. Ensure missions can proceed in a timely manner. Protect civilians and health care. Ceasefire.

Nice commentary and worthwhile read about the new WHO Wasting Guidelines we worked on the last couple of years. Further commentaries and explanations about the guidelines, coordinated by @AllisonIDaniel, are coming soon in a special issue of @GlobalHealthBMJ.

27 children reportedly died from malnutrition in #Gaza, since October 2023. This number will grow if a ceasefire doesn't happen immediately and safety is not ensured for a scaled up aid delivery.

Severe malnutrition can be deadly or leave young children with permanent cognitive & physical damage.   For children in Gaza, every minute counts in safely accessing nutrition, water, medical care & protection from bullets & bombs.   This requires a humanitarian ceasefire NOW.
