[1/18] Question: What do you do with a broken iMac that's over a decade old? The conventional answer is obvious: "throw it away and buy a new one" But I had other ideas... An iMac '09 in 2020, a thread:

Short list of things the government chose not to do, to protect children before deciding to put all social media behind a gate of facial recognition. - Make the advice on no phones in schools statutory, instead of optional. - Making it statutory for early years health visitors and schools to share guides on how to implement technical parental controls at home. - National advertising campaign on the dangers of screen time and social media. Eat your five a day, and then touch some grass. - Tell the nudge unit (behavioural insights team) to make children's phone and social media usage a priority. - Ask questions about screen time in children's check up surveys by GPs. - Allow GPs to prescribe outdoor, offline activities. If this was truly a child safety, health and wellbeing issue, then people would have been campaigning for and trying to implement all of the above. Of course, it's not actually about protecting children.

A handy guide if you’re a TV exec considering a “hard reboot” of a much-loved and highly-acclaimed TV property: 1. Hand in your notice. You’re clearly not competent to work in the business. Just f*** off and clean toilets or something.
So it’s being reported that @AmazonMGMStudio is considering a hard reboot to the Stargate franchise! Absolutely NO ONE wants this! I will actively boycott this! I want a Stargate that feels like Stargate, not something directed at Gen Z women. I am radicalized on this! It’s either Martin Gero or bust! I don’t want to see Stargate from someone who wasn’t involved in the original show. End of story.

🚨 Starmer is about to ban under 16s from social media. And the establishment is already pushing to extend it to under 18s. They want you to believe this is about protecting children. It is not. To enforce an age limit on social media every single user in Britain will be forced to upload their passport to a government approved database just to prove they are allowed to speak online. They are not building a child safety net. They are building a national ID database through the back door and using your children as the excuse to do it. First they arrested people for tweets. Then they monitored legal posts. Now they want your passport before you are allowed to have an opinion. RT if you see exactly what they are building. 🇬🇧

Let’s do the actual maths on this social media ban, because no one in government seems to have bothered. The ban has no financial penalties for parents whose children circumvent it. The companies administering age checks have publicly admitted they cannot do it accurately. The policy is modelled on Australia’s, which the government’s own minister observed is being bypassed by large numbers of teenagers already. A generation that has grown up online will take approximately forty-five minutes to find a workaround, share it on group chats, and post tutorials about it. So what is the enforcement mechanism? There isn’t one. What is the deterrent? There isn’t one. What happens when a 15-year-old uses a VPN and logs in anyway? Nothing. What happens to Meta if they fail to stop them? That part is still being worked out — later this summer, presumably. This is not a policy. It is a gesture. It is the state pointing at a problem it cannot solve and hoping that a press release will be mistaken for a solution. “Things are going to change,” says the Prime Minister. That sentence has done more work for this government than any of its actual legislation. The tragedy is that there are real interventions available — restricting algorithmic amplification, banning autoplay, mandating genuine design changes that reduce compulsive use. Targeted, enforceable, practical. Instead we get a theatrical ban that criminalises nothing, changes nothing, and will be forgotten by conference season. The people who campaigned for this deserve better than a stunt. The children it claims to protect deserve better than this. Is there a single person in government who actually intends to do anything?

I hate this. I hate it with a passion. So personally attacked! 😅
ADHD people screenshotting and bookmarking everything because they're afraid of losing ideas, only to never look at them again because the archive is now its own overwhelming problem

Would it not be quicker if we just banned Keir Starmer and all got on with our lives? 😅
🚨 BREAKING: Keir Starmer will announce a social media ban for under-16s in the UK in the next two weeks

Just so we're clear on how absolutely stupid the British Government is. When a petition is signed with over 2 million people saying No to Digital ID, it gets ignored. When 9000 people answer an online, unadvertised survey, suddenly it's "overwhelming support".
UK consultation results show overwhelming support for social media age limits, with 89% of responding parents backing a legal minimum age requirement. The debate is increasingly shifting from whether age assurance works to how it should be governed and enforced. #ageverification biometricupdate.com/202606/u…
Community note
To say that ~9700 people is an overwhelming support is misleading. gov.uk/government/pub… A petition against it was signed by ~65000 people. "Do not ban social media for under 16s": petition.parliament.uk/petitions/7572… And the anti-digital ID (which is also a form of age verification, amongst other things) was signed by nearly 3m petition.parliament.uk/petitions/7301…

It’s the railway equivalent of a bypass. You move fast trains onto it to free up capacity on the existing railway which, in turn, you use to increase slower services.
The funniest thing is that no one knows what it's for, what problem it will or won't solve.
