What is Bioenergy? Bioenergy is renewable energy derived from biomass, which is organic material sourced from plants and animals. Common examples include woody biomass, multipurpose crops, dedicated biomass crops, and organic waste from industries, agriculture, forestry, and households. Biomass is converted into solid, liquid, or gaseous fuel, which can then be used for heating, electricity generation, or transportation. This factsheet is part of a series from IEA Bioenergy, designed to educate and engage readers about bioenergy's potential and challenges. As the world transitions to renewable energy, we aim to bridge knowledge gaps and encourage the adoption of bioenergy solutions. Find out more on our website 🔗 ieabioenergy.com/blog/public…

The maritime shipping sector is coming under increasing pressure to reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. While biofuels are uniquely positioned to answer the call to decarbonize shipping, there are a number of barriers to introduction in larger quantities, limiting its use for propulsion in shipping to less than one percent of fuels today. This webinar analyses the report by IEA Bioenergy Task 39 (Biofuels to Decarbonize Transport) aims at identifying methods to overcome these barriers, in order to accelerate the transition. Jim Spaeth from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced that the country could reach a production of 3 billion gallons of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) by 2030, based on planned production facilities. In the first half of 2024 alone, 50 million gallons of SAF were produced or imported, avoiding 300 thousand metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions. The long-term goal: replace all fossil jet fuels with sustainable alternatives by 2050, contributing to major emissions reductions and creating one million jobs in the U.S. To achieve this, eight U.S. agencies are working together to build a resilient SAF supply chain. Spaeth emphasized the need for global collaboration, particularly with partners like Brazil, to establish a sustainable aviation fuel ecosystem worldwide. Read more 🔗 ieabioenergy.com/blog/public…

Jack Saddler, co-author of a Task 39 (Biofuels to Decarbonize Transport) study on the aviation sector, advocates for bio-based fuels as the most viable pathway to achieving net zero by 2050. During the recent BBEST – IEA Bioenergy Conference, he highlighted the progress being made in the adoption of biofuels in transportation. You can read a summary of the report on sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), published in January of this year, which he co-authored with Susan van Dyk, PhD. 🔗 ieabioenergy.com/blog/public…

This report, developed within the IEA Bioenergy Task 36 (Material and Energy valorisation of waste in a Circular Economy) framework, highlights the critical role food waste can play as a resource for material and energy valorisation. With approximately 1.05 billion tonnes of food wasted globally each year—about one-third of total food production—there are significant societal, economic, and environmental implications. Food waste management is essential, not only to prevent wastage of valuable resources like land, water, and energy, but also to curb harmful emissions like methane from landfills. The report emphasizes the need for accurate quantification of food loss and waste (FLW) to develop effective reduction or valorisation strategies. Various waste management options, such as composting, anaerobic digestion (AD), and incineration, were assessed using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). Avoiding waste at the source showed the best environmental outcomes, while AD had the lowest impact for unavoidable food residues. The report further explores the potential of food waste as a feedstock for producing value-added chemicals and fuels, advocating for optimized valorisation processes to extract greater value while minimizing environmental harm. The @IEA recently released its "Renewables 2024" report, offering forecasts for renewable energy deployment in electricity, transport, and heat through 2030. It highlights key challenges and barriers to growth, with a special focus on renewable fuels like bioenergy, biogases, renewable hydrogen, and e-fuels. Key insights include: - Renewable fuels will account for less than 6% of global energy demand by 2030, with growth concentrated in Brazil, China, Europe, India, and the US. - Bioenergy leads the way, making up 95% of the total renewable fuel increase, especially in the industrial and transport sectors. - Aviation and maritime biofuels are expanding, but competition for residue oils is growing. - Biogases and renewable hydrogen are gaining momentum, particularly in transport and industry. Despite growth, renewable fuel adoption is projected to fall short of what's needed to reach net-zero by 2050, unless stronger policies and innovations close the cost gap with fossil fuels. Here is an example of a project where such a synergy is being put in practice: Three-year Project Could Set Steelmaker Well on Way to Hydrogen-based Operations – Bio4Energy, bio4energy.se/8192-2/ #green #steel #renewable #hydrogen #biobased #operation @SSAB_AB @swerim_ @LTUniv

⏰ Register now for the free webinar: "Synergies of renewable hydrogen and biobased value chains: case studies", taking place this Thursday, 26 September, from 15:00 to 16:00 CEST. 👉 Biorefinery processes can have a main role in the energy transition to a 100% green industry. Producing biobased hydrogen could be an alternative option for renewable hydrogen provision. Moreover, there are many biobased processes either high in demand for renewable hydrogen (e.g. synthetic renewable fuels, biorefining) or that could benefit from renewable hydrogen integration. This webinar will shed light on promising biobased value chains that could deploy synergies between the hydrogen economy and the biobased economy by focusing on recent concepts for #hydrogen production from #biomass, presenting case studies as tools to assess the synergies of renewable hydrogen and biobased value chains.
