In 1991, Delwin Vriend, an openly gay man, was fired from his job as a laboratory coordinator and chemistry lab instructor in Alberta.
He was told he was fired because he was gay.
His court case helped pave the way to remove bans on same-sex marriage across Canada.

ALT The photo shows Delwin Vriend standing outdoors in front of a building with a sign that reads "The King's College: A Christian Liberal Arts College." The individual is wearing a dark coat and has their arms crossed. The background includes a multi-story building with large windows, some evergreen trees, and a snowy landscape, suggesting a cold season. A streetlight pole and some bare trees are also visible.
