Last night, President Trump threatened to revert DC to governance on a “federal basis.” The statement is the latest in this administration's pattern of interference in DC's autonomy & a direct threat to the democratic rights of DC residents.  Read more: dcfpi.org/press-releases/tru…

Tnx @trayonwhite for meeting w/ Ms. Hall of Ward 8’s Big Mama’s Children’s Center. We appreciate your & @ChmnMendelson’s incredible work to largely restore the Pay Equity Fund. Just $2M more before the second vote can finish the job and prevent educator pay cuts!

We’re not the only ones saying WaPo Ed Board got it wrong…
DC City Council is considering a version of our Wealth Proceeds Tax — a tax on passive investment income, such as capital gains, from wealthy households. The Washington Post editorial page on Monday mischaracterized this proposal and its implications, so let’s clear things up.

Another solid thread from national tax experts on what a Wealth Proceeds Tax would do and who would be affected---details that WaPo got wrong.

Every time a state proposes a tax on the rich, someone predicts an exodus — like WaPo is doing now. But it never happens. The rich are deeply embedded in their communities and typically choose where to live based on many factors other than taxes. vitalcitynyc.org/mamdani-tax…

Most DC residents earn far less than the $500,000 threshold for this tax. Among DC adults with incomes below $500,000, about 60% have bachelor’s degrees. And at least 2/3 of the married people in DC would be exempt because they live in households with incomes below $500,000.

WaPo is calling this a "tax on educated and married people." They clearly didn't read the latest details of the proposal. The tax would only apply to those with incomes exceeding $500,000. About 96% of the tax would be paid by people with incomes over $1 million.

No one was impressed with hers..
I asked @MayorBowser about the D.C. Council's revised budget. She's not impressed: "All I've heard in the last several months is, 'We're too inefficient, we can spend less money!' I'm looking at all these reports and I don't see anyone spending less money. It's all more money."

We also want to thank @BrianneKNadeau for highlighting that the Pay Equity Fund remains underfunded, and @CMLewisGeorgeW4 @CMWendellFelder for calling for a $2M PEF increase to stabilize our child care ecosystem during the first budget today!

And three-quarters of voters in DC approve of taxing the wealth of the top 5%, according to new polling. 9/
To eliminate the Pay Equity Fund and further squeeze an already tightened knot on the DC’s Child Care Subsidy Program is cruel to District families doing their best to raise their kids in the city and make ends meet. Our latest poll shows #WashingtonDC voters disagree with Mayor Bowser and strongly support fully funding both. See more results here: bit.ly/47USWh6

This is a simple, easy to administer tax that already exists and is mostly paid by those with very high income AND wealth, taxpayers getting windfall tax breaks at the federal level that came at the expense of health and food assistance for residents in DC. 8/

The difference is that a small slice of the return on those investments will be channeled into public investments in schools, health care, child care, and other essential services rather than padding the already ample profits of the very wealthy. 7/

It's simply untrue that a very small tax on investment profits will stop wealthy households from making investments. They'll continue to invest and make profits. 6/

WaPo editorial board didn’t bother to get the details right, while insinuating that this is a tax on married educated people. I guess residents with degrees w/incomes below $250k who don’t have passive income but pay taxes on all of their earnings don’t count as educated. 5/

The original proposal was based on the federal thresholds of $200k for singles, $250k for married households, but the tax still largely fell on the top 5% (92% of the tax would have been paid by those above $500k of income). And only 9% of taxpayers would even have paid it. 4/

The most recent proposal on the table would set an income threshold at $500k, which means that only those with passive income above that mark would pay this tax. About 96% of it would be paid by millionaire households and the rest by those in the $500k to $1M range. 3/
