Five years after undergrad, I’m so excited to announce I’m going to @BrownUniversity to start my PhD in Economics this fall! Thank you to @StevenDLevitt, @tedmiguel, and Solene Delecourt, my parents, and my wonderful @UChi_Economics education. Now it begins, @Brown_Economics!

But my latest and biggest accomplishment is turning up temp from 68 to 72 in the Brown library
I have always been really cold in public spaces. Now, I seek retribution for a lifetime of being cold! I will ask ppl to turn up the temp in airplanes. restaurants. Coffee shops. I don’t care if ur hot. I’m cold. And the cold people have been marginalized since AC was invented.

so far reading the methodology section of the EJMR paper is the most confusing part of my summer

So are people who come to US for grad school more likely to quit smoking bc no one in the US smokes? If so, is US grad school better for health than european grad school (irrespective of income)?

After a grueling first year of the phd, feels validating to find this in the mail today ☺️

my favorite paper recently, partially bc it says i'm right to be curmudgeonly about remote work. for engineers, working in person means getting more feedback. This is esp important if you're young or a woman (women/young ppl who received less feedback were more likely to leave)

I’ve been feeling uneasy today reading the GPT-4 news. Like the world is moving too fast for us to grasp. Reading Mary Oliver poetry is the right antidote for tech anxiety

Public good idea: why haven’t Econ grad students crowdsourced MWG solutions better than Tadelis et al? Tadelis solutions are widely used but have many mistakes. We could have repository for MWG solns, share >1 soln per problem, downvote bad solns, etc

The US had a draft in WWII but I don’t think many would say that the US soldiers who fought the Nazis were slaves.
War draftees are slaves. Ukraine has such a draft. US is heavily supporting Ukraine. Thus US is supporting slavery. kyivpost.com/post/11701

It’s still amazing go me how quickly GD mobilizes after a crisis to set up their direct cash system in the crisis zone.
Survivors of the Turkey-Syria earthquakes need more than shelter and food. They need cash. Here’s why it helps. 🧵/4 GiveDirectly.org/turkey

Even $1.5M / year to use ChatGPT and its friends at your business seems like severe underpricing. I guess it could be not that much compute but still seems low. Anybody in econ thinking about AI pricing?

OpenAI's leaked Foundry pricing says a lot – if you know how to read it – about GPT4, The Great Implementation, a move from Generative to Productive AI, OpenAI's safety & growth strategies, and the future of work. Another AI-obsessive megathread on what to expect in 2023 🧵
