Giant ichthyosaurs are one of the most underrated animals in paleontology, so I helped co-produce a video with The Vividen regarding information about the largest predatory ones and a new enormous specimen. Hope you enjoy and learn something new. youtube.com/watch?v=rOVWVgVC…

Here are my random guesses (for fun) about the possible mass of this new discovery. Conservative: 60t, Mean: 80t, Upper: 130t. Anyone else want to take a go? About 3.5 hours until the paper releases.

Godfrey indeed seems to be more accurate on his assessment of it being much more likely to be predation rather than scavenging, scavenging is possible though not close to as likely in the lower jaw region. livescience.com/megalodon-sh…

But I am not surprised, I am skeptical of people proposing such events as equally likely predation or scavenging (when there is more reasoning for one side) but it is what it is. x.com/Apexzious/status/16801…

I don't really care as people already claim that they are all simply scavenging events anyways, so might as well let them believe in it. Not much that can be said here. Though I still don't think these are comparable.

Not to say that lone orcas can't kill whale nearly in their size class, such as bull orcas killing rorquals of similar length (though generally smaller mass) but even this is quite occasional. Females and bulls seem to have different strengths and roles in whale-hunting.

But not exactly the same situation with significantly different prey size for the given species (humpback adult vs calf) from what is scientifically reported in this paper and that record mentioned. So interesting, but not necessarily out of the ordinary.
