In the lunar phase calendar, the New Moon is the first of four major phases…but beginning this weekend, we will actually get a new moon! Essentially, Earth’s gravity captures an asteroid passing by our planet, which becomes a small moon for a temporary period. In this case, 2024 PT5, which is from the Arjuna asteroid belt, will remain with us for roughly two months before leaving orbit and moving on. The science of these “mini-moons” is quite interesting and they occur fairly frequently!
