Today's cracker from Prof Bill Mitchell - A cracker from Prof Bill Mitchell today - 'The data shows that between 1953-54 to 2022-2023, the Australian Federal Government ran deficits for 52 of the 74 years or 74 per cent of the time.' Gee I wonder - did the sky fall in?

I call on the Australian government to #RaiseTheRate of all support payments to a living wage. This would be the single most effective way to lift the productivity, quality of life, and well-being of the whole country. #CommitToALivingWage

Political democracy without economic democracy leaves the commanding heights of society in private hands. The struggle is therefore not only for the vote, but for democratic control over the economy itself. #EconomicDemocracy #DemocratizeTheEconomy

Welcome description of the Social Security Trust Fund bank balance as “metaphorical”. As Greenspan noted, ageing population is a real resources problem, not a financial resources problem. youtu.be/DNCZHAQnfGU

“It's literally the gulag,” one of the employees claims. “You have zero purpose in life all of a sudden, you barely interact with anyone, you just have these tasks every week." Another employee describes some of the tasks—generating puzzles to test how reliably AI models from Meta and other companies can solve them—as easy compared to the software development work they had been doing previously. But the new projects feel menial, and “almost all” employees seem unhappy, they say. “Most people find the work soul-crushing,” the third employee says. wired.com/story/mark-zuckerb…

You reduce crime by eliminating poverty. The actual reason so called nice neighborhoods have lower crime rates is because people’s basic needs are being met. It is not because of police, alarm systems, or neighborhood associations. Poverty creates crime.

Politicians loved the language of ‘missions’ while ignoring the institutional transformation they actually require. You cannot have a mission-oriented economy if the economic relationships underlying it are still parasitic and structured around the old assumptions. My new book, The Common Good Economy, is an attempt to complete that work, not just what governments do, but how everyone in the economy relates to one another in doing it.

The fiscal limit isn't determined by a current measure of GDP if there are unused resources including labour. Measuring 'productivity' in a service economy is notoriously difficult. It requires a sectorally and geographically dispersed 'basket of activities' approach. The big problem has been lack of private investment in local service provision. Good state pensions help to boost and stabilise effective demand in sectors and geographical locales with unused resources and contribute to potential GDP, thus justifying private and public investment. We should significantly increase them.
