Hundreds of DC residents responded to #ThePeoplesDemandsDC survey, and “streetcar” and “more money for cops that cooperate with ICE” weren’t on there. See the full list of demands @ thepeoplesdemandsdc.com/#dem… and share them widely. Stay tuned for more info!

The budget is everybody’s business!! It’s always wonderful to be in community with great leaders like Robert and Rachelle from @thewayhomeDC and People for Fairness Coalition 💕🫶🏽 Join the movement for a fair budget, which this one ain’t! Go to FairBudget.org
As we continue to work through the mayor’s budget, we wanted to lift up the amazing action that took place last week! TWHC leaders Robert Warren and Rachelle Ellison participated in an action at the Wilson Building ahead of Mayor Bowser releasing her budget proposal.

We love to see it! Proud @FairBudgetDC members here ✨ Shoutout to our client leader who took part in the action!
We shut down @MayorBowser's Budget Forum tonight to demand she stop balancing the DC budget on the backs of Black & brown working class people. We have revenue solutions to address budget pressures and also achieve a #TaxSystem4Justice SIGN HERE --> bit.ly/peoplestaxplan

Folks can drop by MLK Library any time between 2-4:30 pm on the 29th to speak with the community advocates who participated in the training and are eager to discuss their ideas. We'll welcome you and bring the snacks, but we won't be the ones talking :) dcjusticelab.org/events/

The #BrokenHeartBudget is so 💔💔 bc it 💔 significantly underfunds essential needs 💔 doesn't reflect DC values like 👉🏾 racial equity 👉🏾 inclusion 👉🏾 predictability of government services 👉🏾 community wellbeing We still hope @ChmnMendelson fixes it with more investmts!
Many have called this year's budget a #BrokenHeartBudget. It's also a budget filled with broken promises. The @councilofdc can still keep its promises with the second FY24 Budget Vote. Read more: wearedcaction.org/dc-council…

Nona became an ancestor two yrs ago today, so we decided to honor her by asking a few of her loved ones what do they want everyone to remember about Nona. Time hasn’t taken away our grief, but we know she’s with us in Spirit. Continue to rest peacefully, beautiful butterfly 🦋✨

I called ERAP today to check on a clients application that was submitted in March. ERAP stated that they hadn't gotten to March yet and were still working on Januarys. DC urgently needs more funding for ERAP.

Just a reminder as the Bowser Administration seems to be intensifying encampment clearings (again), there are non-harmful solutions to encampments. The primary solution must be housing. @thewayhomeDC @FairBudgetDC

Years ago the council mandated that D.C. move its rent-control paperwork into digital format and create a public database of all rent-controlled units. The project has been delayed for years, as I reported in late 2020: wamu.org/story/20/12/22/a-to…

One key issue: Bowser's administration says it can't absorb the somewhat meager costs of implementing the council's emergency bill to prevent the rent hikes. Why? Well, D.C.'s rent-control system is still mostly paper based, so changes take time and personnel.

Either she’s being disingenuous or she truly has no idea how one of the City’s most critical homelessness prevention tools works…. …..just saying
Replying to @maustermuhle
Bowser also says there's a "moral hazard" to a large pot of emergency rental assistance, in that people who might otherwise be able to work and pay their rent could opt not to since they could apply for rental assistance.

.@MayorBowser's budget would eliminate the Criminal Code Reform Commission. This would leave the District without an agency to revise its penal laws—ranked among the worst in the nation. cfo.dc.gov/sites/default/fil…

Def interesting news out of McDuffie’s office. Cautiously optimistic about the task force make up, and looking forward to comment period!
Councilmember McDuffie, re-introduced the Reparations Foundation Fund and Task Force Establishment Act of 2023. The legislation would establish a 9-member task force to study and develop reparations proposals for African Americans in the District of Columbia.
