Thank you, Katrin (@biozentrum) for a great summary of our paper! You can also check out this "Behind the Paper" written by @ATejadaArranz: communities.springernature.c…
New research by @Basler_Lab reveals a surprising microbial trade-off: The bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa activates a general defense program to survive “speargun” attacks from rival bacteria, but this defense makes it more vulnerable to antibiotics. 👇biozentrum.unibas.ch/news/de…

Update to BacFighT6, with presets for easy exploration of complex behaviors: sites.google.com/view/bacfig… Try "battle royale" preset where prey (blue) produce capsule, attackers (red) move towards prey and feed on it, defenders (orange) retaliate! Took a while to eliminate the reds!

Major update to BacFighT6: sites.google.com/view/bacfig… Simulate the role of motility/chemotaxis, capsule production, activation by autoinducers, contact dependent killing, kin-exclusion, foraging and more. Long simulations, extensive data import/export and analysis. Interactive Q&A!

Check out the NotebookLM powered interactive Q&A: sites.google.com/view/bacfig… This is based on the scientific literature and the simulation code. Literature is cited in the help and the documentation. Extremely helpful!

The prey (blue) multiply, don't move and produce capsule (purple). The predators (red) move towards prey and attack non-kin. They divide only if they lyse prey. The defenders (orange) move randomly and defend themselves by retaliation (divide if they lyse a cell). Who wins?

To make our research more approachable, I used #Gemini to develop (mostly by #vibecoding) a simulation of #T6SS mediated bacterial interactions. I hope that you'll have as much fun as I have with this and that you'll learn something new! sites.google.com/view/bacfig…

Poke bacteria with a sharp needle and they poke back in just a few seconds! Congratulations to Mitchell (and others) for this analysis of Pseudomonas #T6SS assembly in response to membrane damage! Collaboration with Rod Lim's lab @biozentrum @SNIunibas! science.org/doi/10.1126/scia…

For over 10 years, we've known that neighboring P. aeruginosa cells engage in rounds of H1-T6SS firing. It was unclear how this starts since H1-T6SS only fires in response to an attack. Now we know: journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128… Congrats Max, Sharath, Alejandro, and others!

Thank you, Katrin (@biozentrum), for a great summary of our work! biozentrum.unibas.ch/news/de…

ALT 30-minute long snapshot of infection of host cells by Burkholderia thailandensis (white). The pathogen polymerizes actin (green) to move from one host cell to another and breaks the membranes (magenta) by its Type VI Secretion System (T6SS - white spots in the bacteria).

Exciting discovery by @PlumifyM & @Basler_Lab: The intracellular pathogen #Burkholderia uses the #T6SS nano-speargun to spread in the body without being recognized by the immune system. @biozentrum @Unibasel_en @cellhostmicrobe @ERC_Research ow.ly/BBNe50RjBf7
