What does Magyar mean to MAGA?
The fall of Viktor Orbán’s government in Hungary does not mean the defeat of the
#European right, but rather signals its transformation toward conservative and moderate nationalism. The rise of Péter Magyar is a clear example of this trend: a figure who, while maintaining the principles of patriotism and immigration control, has distanced himself from authoritarianism, corruption, and alignment with
#Russia.
European right-wing parties have adjusted their positions in response to electoral realities. The war in Ukraine in 2022 was a turning point that revealed Moscow’s aggressive nature and increased the political cost of closeness to the Kremlin. As a result, European populists, unlike in the past, now see themselves as defenders of national sovereignty within the framework of
#NATO and the West.
These developments have caused the European right to distance itself from some currents of the
#MAGA movement in the United States. With the departure of Orbán, who was a financial backer of anti-EU think tanks, this influence infrastructure has been weakened. It is possible that the U.S. Republican Party may also move closer to the democratic model represented by Péter Magyar in the future.
