📜NEW WORKING PAPER📜 What was the true case fatality rate (CFR) of smallpox? My new paper with Romola Davenport (Cambridge) revisits this question using 18th-century data from Sweden and Iceland—and challenges the long-held belief that smallpox CFRs were 20–30%. 🧵👇 1/6

So, Twin Peaks is in production & Lynch is up in Washington and hears that a particularly annoying ABC executive is coming for a set visit. The executive shows up in the morning and Lynch proclaims "You've got a great face! I'm gonna make you an extra. Get him to hair & makeup!"

There will never be a David Lynch again. One because he was special, two because the conditions in which be got to become a filmmaker and take risks don’t exist anymore

Trying not to be bitter about this. But as Christine Vachon pointed out last year re: Haynes, there are only so many years the greats have left, and we are losing so many masterpieces because of the failures of the American industry rn.
Shoutout to everybody at Netflix who decided not to move forward with all the projects David Lynch wanted to do in his final years. I'm sure all the other stuff you greenlit instead was much better.

Rewatching The Return last month I was struck by what an unprecedented line in the sand it offers. A sprawling canvas of weaving liminalities, dissonant aesthetics, and narrative that degrades instead of develops. It’s like a challenge from one century of the medium to the next

I got to be friends with David Lynch when we were both at Universal years ago. A very kind man, he was a fan of Bob's Big Boy. So was I. I'm going to miss him. R.I.P. David.

Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole. In memory of David Lynch, we will continue to explore the otherworldly and the unknown. We will focus not on the loss, but on what we gained from the years we shared this planet with you. We will see you in our dreams.
