Pretend you are the Chairman of the NLRB. You are about to rule on whether a very big corporation or union violated federal labor law. You receive a call from the president instructing you to dismiss the case because that corp/union just donated a lot of money to the campaign…
There's going to be a Supreme Court case where the court strikes down something called Humphrey's Executor, which is all about government seating charts. Democrats love seating charts, so get ready for wailing, but ignore it.

The president further states that if you do not dismiss the case, you will be fired. Should you be allowed to resist the president’s demands? For 90 years, there was a very clear answer to this question for the NLRB, FTC, SEC, etc. And it was good that the answer was “yes.”

Ignoring the merits of the bill, will labor-curious conservatives support increased funding for the NLRB that is necessary to give the law teeth? Will they urge the administration to rebuild the FMCS after letting DOGE nuke it last spring?
1/10 Important vote in the House today on the Faster Labor Contracts Act, which guarantees a first contract to workers who organize a union. It's the best opportunity yet for conservatives to show they support strong labor laws and the rights of workers. 🧵

NEW: The IRS slashed staff last year. One idea it had to ensure public-facing operations weren't disrupted was to move HR and IT staff with no experience into roles processing tax returns. One problem: a large portion of those employees are failing their certifications to do so

Compelling essay by sci-fi writer Ted Chiang on why LLMs are nowhere near consciousness, but why it serves the interests of LLM companies to constantly suggest that they might be. I've pulled one quote below, but the whole article is worth reading.

My question: Why would athletes choose to collective bargain? They’ve got the best of all worlds now. Unlimited free agency NIL current student athlete protections Plus, who would schools bargain with? There is no official group to negotiate with. Too late?

This morning we are introducing COGE — the Commission on Government Efficiency.

This Commission will find ways for our city to work smarter, faster, and more effectively for working people.

New Yorkers deserve a city government as careful with their money as they are.

This is better than expected, and much better than the status quo, but punting on the employee status question seems irresponsible (even if it increases the law’s chance of passage).
Senators Ted Cruz and Maria Cantwell have agreed on a bipartisan college sports bill called the Protect College Sports Act, a Republican Commerce Committee aide confirms. They hope it can gain enough support to actually reach 60 votes in the Senate. Details in thread:

Mayor Zohran Mamdani mocks Ronald Reagan’s infamous quote. “I can think of nine words more terrifying than ‘I’m from the government and I’m here to help…’” “I worked all day and can’t feed my family.”

people always joke that you can get the equivalence of an english degree by going to the library, but this is not so. the immortal art of close reading and dialectics must be taught. the truth, however, is you can get a business degree by just watching a few youtube videos
JUST IN: Business schools are slashing MBA tuition by as much as 50% due to falling demand.

Admin postings went up this week; attorney and investigator postings are imminent. If you are a barred attorney, HR professional, union staffer, or a person with any interest in labor and are wanting to work for the NLRB, get your resume ready and begin checking USAJobs.
The NLRB will be hiring sometime this month and the USAJobs windows will be very short. These postings do not come around often (unfortunately). If you are at all interested in applying and have questions about working here, feel free to DM me!

One of the defining hallmarks of our modern age is that people in charge of good things are willing to make them incrementally worse for a chance to make more money, knowing most people are powerless to stop it.
The NCAA officially announces that the fields of the Division I men's and women's basketball championships will increase from 68 teams to 76 starting in 2027.
