Vast swaths of rainforests are razed to make way for palm oil plantations. Palm oil is cheap, odorless and found in 1/2 of products on supermarket shelves. But @C16Bio created an alternative called Torula Oil, which is already being adopted by many large brands.

On stage at @FastCompany Most Innovative Companies Summit in New York this week. Thanks for naming us one of your 2024 Most Innovative Companies!
About 50% of products on supermarket shelves —from Nutella to laundry detergents—contain palm oil. But harvesting the ingredient is extremely harmful to the environment. Instead of trees, @c16bio is creating Palmless oil from yeast.

There are many fertile technology frontiers today ...but I think what is going on in biology is maybe the single most exciting. The amount of incredibly talented people we've met just ATTACKING key technology problems is so exciting, and if successful the impact will be so enormous. The average quality of the people in this field has blown me away. I read the Right Stuff, about the Apollo program, many times and don't think its hyperbolic to compare the vibes and energy of the Apollo program to some of what's being worked on in bio. And for everyone with family members and friends who stand to benefit from this work, its far more important than the moon. The passion is palpable. From novel therapies, to novel deliver mechanisms for new and old therapies, to innovations that'll drastically improve manufacturing (and its many major bottlenecks), it really doesn't end. We are all so lucky this is happening.

The global edible oils industry is projected to reach $870 billion by 2050, but the industry’s growth will be limited by insufficient arable land for oilseed crops to grow. Alternative options like Palmless™ are critical to fill this gap.
