California gas tax goes up again July 1. New rate: 63.4¢/gallon. CA drivers pay the highest in the nation. A 2-cent hike may sound small, but CA drivers are already getting crushed at the pump. Gas Is Already $6. California Is Raising the Tax Again on July 1. The state gas tax goes up 2.2 cents per gallon on July 1 under a law requiring automatic annual increases. California will now charge 63.4 cents per gallon in gas taxes alone. The highest in the nation. Newsom was asked about a gas tax holiday while families are paying $6 a gallon. He said no.
