EU Commission welcomed Product Environmental Footprint Category Rules (PEFCR) for apparel and footwear, representing a major step toward more transparent and science‑based sustainability in the textile sector. Developed over five years with input from industry, NGOs, and national bodies, these rules: 🔸 Apply a science-based, impartial method to assess environmental impact across the entire product lifecycle 🔸 Treat all materials equally, ensuring no fibre or product type is favoured 🔸 Support companies in designing more durable, repairable, and resource‑efficient products 🔸 Align with the EU’s Strategy for Sustainable and Circular Textiles and the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation Further refinements are planned, including metrics on microplastic shedding and biodiversity impacts, strengthening the EU’s shift to a truly circular economy. Within CELLFIL, our dedicated work package on Sustainability developed together with @Quantis_intl, is building on this foundation.
