🌍🌊 A major international recognition for our commitment to advancing ocean knowledge and conservation
💪 We are very proud to announce that our initiative to model global zooplankton and micronekton biomass has been officially endorsed as a project of the
@UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.
These organisms are key components of marine ecosystems, linking primary producers to top predators. They also perform vertical migration, making them crucial players in the transport and sequestration of carbon from the surface layer to the deep ocean, which is of paramount importance in the context of climate change.
🐟 This recognition was granted by the
@IocUnesco, with the support of the
#OceanDecade Coordination Team, as part of the global effort to build “the science we need for the ocean we want” through strengthened scientific knowledge and international cooperation aimed at addressing the major challenges of understanding, protecting, and sustainably managing the ocean.
Our project is now part of the international programme
#JETZON (Joint Exploration of the Twilight Zone Ocean Network), dedicated to exploring and understanding the mesopelagic zone, a critical yet still poorly understood ocean ecosystem.
This endorsement highlights:
🔵 The strategic importance of low and mid trophic levels in ocean ecosystem functioning,
🔵 The need for open, collaborative, and accessible science,
🔵 And the importance of dialogue between scientists, economic stakeholders, and policy makers.
We warmly thank the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO, the Ocean Decade Coordination Team, as well as all our partners and collaborators for their trust and support.
This milestone marks the beginning of a new phase of international momentum for our work, fostering greater collaboration and advancing our collective understanding of the ocean.
