Please forgive the obligatory, cheesy ‘author holding their book’ photo.
After working on this research for so long, it feels wonderful to see and hold it as something real and tangible.
It is a privilege to make an original contribution to our historical understanding of these fascinating events: the 1797 fleet mutinies.
Book available now (please recommend it to your university librarian):

Absolutely delighted my book is published and available now! Huge thanks to the whole team at Palgrave for making this a reality. The book offers a brand new interpretation of the biggest and potentially most dangerous popular protest in Britain during the Age of Revolutions.
OUT NOW: 'The 1797 Naval Mutinies and Popular Protest in Britain: Negotiation through Collective Action' by @CallumCe309, the latest volume in the series 'Global Studies in Social and Cultural Maritime History.'

I am delighted to share the news that my essay 'A Matter of “Good Usage”: Towards a new interpretation of the 1797 Fleet Mutinies at Spithead and the Nore' has been awarded the Sir Julian Corbett Prize in Modern Naval History for 2025.
The piece argues that viewing these mutinies as practical processes of negotiation allows us to reconcile their supposed contradictions and appreciate their complexity.
Hopefully, the essay will be published in the journal Historical Research in the coming year.
I am pleased to say that my latest article, ‘The Greenwich pensioners and Britain's naval workforce, 1764–1869’ has just been published online with the International Journal of Maritime History.
The article can be viewed open access at

This one examines the impact of cycles of war and peace on the changing features and composition of the population of veteran naval sailors who lived at Greenwich Hospital: the Greenwich pensioners.
Skilled sailors were crucial for British security and prosperity, and the wealth of information available about the Greenwich pensioners offers an unusually detailed insight into a subset of that crucial seagoing workforce.
It was a great pleasure to contribute a chapter on the Greenwich pensioners to this exciting new book. Congratulations to my fellow contributors and a big thank you to @AndrewBamford10 and @kaizer_nick for guiding us through the process!

I have no words.
I mean, I LOVE a court martial, but even I acknowledge this is excessive 🤷♂️
Just how badly behaved were these navy boys?!
@kejamieson_@CallumCe309@UkNatArchives
Literally the whole reading stopped. Laughed. Took pictures. And then took video. 🤦♂️
